F100 Trim Down problem

After a long road trip which may just be coincidence my down trim doesn't want to work. The pump motor runs but seems to be runningh offload and nothing happens. I had to lean hard on the engine to get it to go down. It lifts nice and postive every time but won't go down.

Cna anyone suggest the remedy? I'm assuming there's neough oil in the system as it's the same oil that's lifting it and it takes more oil on the lift side of the cylinder! What oil should I put in if it needs some and again if anyone can tell me how to determione the correct level I'd appreciate it.

I don't have the manual and only had time to recover the boat last weekend and no time to look at it beofre I get back to it this weekend.

Thanks in advance.

Re: F100 Trim Down problem

Actually it was/is debris. I found one ofthe ball bearings in the trim piston valves arrangement had got lose above the piston and made some real nasty dents into the piston. The pump can just about jack it up as it's working on the bigger piston area. It can't jack it down because it's working on a smaller piston area (becasue of the piston rod). Next problem for those Winter evenings is trying to get the peened oversize tilt piston out of the trim cylinder. Slide hammer on the piston shaft eye didn't budge it and it's hard to hold the trim piston safely against damage. I think a puller working on the piston.....

Oh well at least I know what I'm dealing with now although I can't imagine how the ball and spring came a adrift. Dark thoughts about the previous owner........

Re: F100 Trim Down problem

the single ram dual cylinder system has six small balls that lock the outer piston into a detent. if trailered in the up position with no mechanical lock it tends to seriously indent the cylinder.
not much fix for it other than cylinder replacement.
