F115 Starter Issue

Had the boat with the mechanic today to check the fuel system and an intermittent(new) starting issue.
First instance was a clicking sound, no starter response. Cleaned the battery terminal and it started fine.
Next trip the starter spun without the engine turning over. After several tries it started.
Last time the engine cranked and after about a second the starter spun(spinning sound), happened twice and finally cranked.

Mechanic looked at it and said it sounds like a gear is spinning (maybe stripped) I don't know that he spent too much time with it.

Here is my problem. I can replace a starter. The Yamaha OEM is upwards of $500! I've found some third party units for around $100. And I assume I can probably find a rebuilt unit.

Any opinion on these non OEM ones? And should I start with more troubleshooting first. New battery(at least get it load tested, I think it is the original 2005)? Other tests?

Thanks

6 years is a long time for a marine battery. That would be a good place to start.

Agreed. I had planned on getting to it. I think an Auto Parts place can do a load test just like a car battery?? The mechanic admitted he's seen few starters go bad. Any opinion on third party replacements?

I read about a Voltage Drp test over on The Hull Truth. Is that performed with the kill switch engaged so the motor doesn't start?
