Researching some troubleshooting of a starter problem. Does a 2005 F115 have a separate starter coil and starter or is it integrated. If I want to jumper across the coil to test the starter.
And is there a way to test the starter relay?

Thanks

Remove plastic cover *1, look for a brown bullet connector, disconnect the bullet connector apply 12volts to the male end (a bullet connector is a connection that can be seperated by pulling it apart). Once 12volts is aplied starter solenoid will be engaged and starter should engage. This will start the engine if key switch is on, recommend turning key off and pulling emergency stop lanyard.

Thanks,
The plastic cover, the main cover on top of the motor?(Under the engine shroud)

Remove the cowl and on the front of the engine plastic cover should be easliy removed by snap clamps no screws needed to remove.

Re: F115 Starter Motor

Thanks, Going to try this tomorrow. I have an intermittent issue when starting. The motor may try to turn over for a second the the starter drops back to a whine. If the battery load tests good and this test works what's next?
Voltage drop test to see if I'm losing voltage somewhere? Is the coil integrated into the starter? One view looked like it.
Do starters usually have intermittent issues? Or is it more likely connections in that case.

Thanks

Re: F115 Starter Motor

you need to look at the starter when the problem is happening to see if the gear is dropping down away from the flywheel(disengaging) or is it staying engaged but gear slipping on shaft. there is a friction type clutch in the Bendix that if you get lube on it it will start slipping.

Not sure what you are calling the coil? you have the start relay

Re: F115 Starter Motor

Got to the boat today and removed the cover. I didn't see any brown connector.
Beneath the cover, bottom to top:
Blue connector
Terminal block(heavy black and white wires)
Gray connector
Two yellow connectors
Two green connectors

On the gray connector, the back side had multiple small wires but the front had what looked like two wires taped(electrical) together, terminated. Any idea what those are?

I didn't have any help so I didn't try jumpering anything but I did spin the bendix up by hand. It turned and rose up to the gear. Should the shaft be lubricated? Seemed dry.
BTW- the battery load tested good.
I took a few pics and try to post.

Thanks

Re: F115 Starter Motor

Update*
I went out this morning and took the cover off. Before lubricating anything I tried to turn the motor over. The bendix moves up and starts to turn the flywheel. It then stays engaged and starts slipping on the shaft. This is before I put on any lubrication. Tried it a few times and sometimes it engages and cranks, other times it engages and slips. A few times it did not drop back, I could push it off the flywheel and it dropped back in.
Removed the bolts and pulled the starter away. I was able to rotate the bedix up higher and went ahead and sprayed some WD40 on it.
I was able to turn it the opposite direction easily. I seem to have read somewhere that it should not rotate the other direction, that it locks. Does this seem ok?

Question:
If the bendix is lifting and cranks sometimes before spinning on the shaft does this indicate good voltage and most likely the starter needs to be replaced?

Thanks for all of the help.

Re: F115 Starter Motor

I have removed Bendix before and cleaned with a solvent like break-clean and reinstalled to stop the slipping. bendix should not slip on shaft, sounds like that is your problem

Re: F115 Starter Motor

Thanks yam,

If I never lubricated anything what could have started the slipping? I would think it would be more likely to bind. Also, What do you think of being able to rotate the bendix both directions?

Also,
Does this pretty much clear any low voltage concern, for now?

Thanks

Re: F115 Starter Motor

Went to the boat to remove the starter and did a minimal load test.
Battery + to -, no cranking = 12.62 volts
Battery + to - while cranking = 11.35 volts
Battery + to Starter +, while cranking = .6Volts(jumped around a bit, all less than .6V)
Battery - to Starter case, while cranking = .7volts

The bendix was raised and spinning on it's shaft for all tests(original problem)

Do these numbers look good for the voltages?

Took the starter off and plan on having it tested.
Thanks

Re: F115 Starter Motor

Just had the starter tested. Good, as expected. Since their test does not load the starter so the bendix spun up great. Is there anything else I can test before replacing this starter?

Thanks

I would replace the bendix not the whole starter

Thanks,
I'd rather let someone else tackle that. Just a standard shop that rebuilds starters?

Re: F115 Starter Motor

Yea, they can do it or a Yamaha shop, either way the part will probably have to be ordered from Yamaha dealer. Probably cheaper if you get the part and then take in to get it changed, but you can ask before doing it.
