F150 fuel filter

Rodbolt;<br />I have a 2004 Stratos 285 Pro-XL with a Yamaha F150 on it. I try to take very good care of the boat and engine. I broke it in correctly and changed the oil after break in. I use seafoam in every tank of fuel. I always let the engine warm up 5 minutes before I take off on the water. I have read on other Yamaha four-strokes the water seperator/fuel filter is not the best micron size. Is the filter on the F150 a better filter or should I put an external water seperator/fuel filter on? Thank you.

hello<br /> were it me I would use about a 10 micron externa water seperator. but after installing it you must do a fuel system vacum test as outlined in the service manual. fuel system vacum,measured at the fuel pump intake, cannot exceed 4" Hg. but its best to stop debris/water long before it makes the motor. marine fuel systems are a weak link no matter who made it. most failures come down to cooling or fuel system issues.

I also have the F150 and put a water/seperator on it this year before starting it up. While at it, I also put a fuel shut off valve on before the seperator to minimize gas spilling into the bilge when changing the filter.<br /><br />I took it out last Saturday and everything seemed to be working OK.
