2003 200hp F200TXRB 4 Stroke Yamaha that will not start. Motor started to have issues with starting months before but usually after several tries or thinking some magical wire was reconnected it would start and have no problems. Motor runs fine once started and will usually continually start up over and over again from that point. Not sure if the starter, solenoid, or something else is going bad and not sure where to look. All connections from the key and dead man switch appear to be intact and not corroded at the connections. Meter readings at the connection for the starter solenoid reads 12+ volts with the key in the on position. Any ideas on how to trim down the possible problems or even just a miracle fix ? Thanks!

Re: F200TXRB Starting Problem

What kind of starting problems are you having?
Motor will not turn over with the starter?
Or it turns over but will not fire up?

Have you cleaned all connections on battery up to the motor including the grounds?

Key to on should not put 12 volts to starter relay, but key to start position should.

If power to start relay in start position from key switch and the relay in not picking up then either the relay is bad or you are missing a ground due to corrosion maybe

Re: F200TXRB Starting Problem

Without someone else to help I can't check voltage upon trying to crank the engine. The key only has two static positions, on and off, and the momentary for engine start. The starter relay appears to be directly connected to the positive line in so I'm assuming that's why I have power to it with the key on. I have alot of cowling to take off before I can really get to look at more of it (Yamaha did not make this model user friendly).

Re: F200TXRB Starting Problem

After removing the cowling I was able to jump the starter from the battery line in. The starter spins quickly, but didn't lift up to engage the flywheel. From what I've read up on other posts I'm guessing that my jumper doesn't supply it the proper voltage to engage?? One extra wire in the solenoid that I'm not sure where or what it's for but wondering if that is keeping it from firing or if the whole thing is bad.

Grounds are good, at least the ones I know of. Both batteries and ground on the engine are good to go (cleaned them up with a wire wheel), but still no starter. There is a relay that the solenoid is hooked up to but I don't know how to check it.

Most likely the starting relay is going bad. You'll have to pull the intake manifold off and it's off on the right side. It has a bullet connector that you can unplug and touch it to 12 volts and see if you can get it to act up again.

Re: F200TXRB Starting Problem

Starting relay was the problem. We were able to jump it's connection, I believe some sort of power control wire, and the engine fired up. Yamaha replacement part, $72, was put in and she fires right up. So thankful for not having to change a starter or a solenoid. Thanks to L for the idea!
