Hi, it's my first post. I'm thinking of getting a new boat and I'm looking for input on the F250 vs. the Vmax 250. I would prefer to get the 4 stroke but, I've seen a couple of posts where the Yamaha four stroke engines make oil and I'm leery of getting into that situation. Does that apply to the new F250 or is it ok? Are the VMax engines more reliable? How do they compare from a performance perspective?
Thanks
Don

Re: F250 vs. VMax250

good news! you cannot screw this up. both motors are nice running motors. i am a fan of yams. f250! smooth, quiet, and reliable. the f250 may give up a little performance to the "V"max. if posible, a demo ride may help you make up your mind. "making oil" is not a yam. problem. it can happen to any e.f.i 4 stroke if conditions are right. usually stuck thermostats or over cooling problems.

Re: F250 vs. VMax250

Thanks Blackbox!
I have a 2005 Ranger 621VS with a Merc Verado 250 and I have had a lot of trouble with it making oil. Merc has been involved and they have paid for repairs for the most part but the problem persists. I have had the boat in 13 times and it still does it. They are going to change the injectors now and I think that will solve the trouble but I've lost faith in the boat. It even has a new powerhead. I'm fed up and I'm thinking of selling it and getting a Skeeter WX2100 with a Yamaha 250 either 2 or 4 stroke but after my bad experience with the Merc 4 I'm concerned about getting into the same situation with a Yami. It seems like the V Max 250 either isn't used very much any more or they are so good, nobody has any problems with them in the boating forums. I have emailed Skeeter to ask about the performance difference.
Thanks again for your post.

sorry to hear you are unhappy with your verado! i like the motors, and the customers seam to like them. befor you give up on the verado, did you try visitng the great web site for verado owners?(google it). i have seen some problems in the fuel module that have caused a rich running condition, but nothing that could not be pinpointed and repaired. good luck!

Re: F250 vs. VMax250

Hello Blackbox,
I'm a member of the contributors sections of the Verado Owners Club website. It's a great website and Glen the gentleman who runs it has been helpful to me as well. My Verado troubles are well documented in the contributors section. The performance of the Verado has been great but the motor makes oil badly. It puts about 1.25 litres of gas into the oil every 10 hours. Mercury has been involved for 2 years, I have had it to 3 dealers and it will end up being taken to a fourth dealer. It has had a new power head and that didn't stop the trouble. I have had the engine in for service for this problem 13 times now and it has to go to another dealer soon. The problem I have is I can't sell the boat with the engine in this condition. A lot of guys on here re-power their boats but It seems like a waste to me. If I'm going to spend that much money on a motor, I might as well buy a new boat.
As far as Yamaha is concerned, I have learned that the VMax 250 doesn't come with a 25" shaft so it couldn't be used on the boat I like. I have heard that Yamaha is bringing out new fourstrokes and it will be announced on November 20th. Thanks for your input.
