Existing floor is in good condition so I am relaying 3/8'' plywwood over existing. I coated the plywood front n back with boiled linseed oil. "Father-in -laws idea". What should I really do to protect the plywood befor carpeting?

Why are you covering the existing flooring if it is in good condition? Also you haven't mentioned what kind of boat you have.

I think you could be headed for trouble by just fastening a new floor over the old. Ya better cough up a few more details before you nail that floor down.

Not to mention the added weight of the plywood and its propensity to trap condensation and water between the sheets. I would recondition the old floor if its a cosmetic thing and not structural. Seems like a lot of work for something that doesnt need it.

Ok .. The floor isn't in good shape in some places. The boat is a 1972, 18ft aluminum Areocraft with a 65hp evinrude. I don't won't to tear up the old floor since that would be alot of work. What is normally done to water proof the floor?

If it isn't in good shape in some places due to rot (which is a fungus) there is no top coating that will water proof it since the fungus will spread. Automotive anti freze will kill the fungus and you might try that.

Bite the bullet & do it right - - new floor.

Re: Facelift on floor of boat

Thanks yto all
I know the right thing to do is replace the floor with a new one, But I'm cheap and never have done the right thing  . I've got 3/8'' plywood cut and ready to lay over the old floor. I know this is wrong way to do the job, you guys are the experts. I only need to get by a couple years cause I have ms and won't be long before I've got to sell the boat. I will give all info to the new owner. Having said that, any ideas about covering the 3/8'' plywood? Just need to get by for a couple years. Thanks to all that replied !!!

Since you insist - - give the existing floor and the new wood a liberal coat of epoxy and allow it to dry thoroughly.
