I've seen several names for a "factory" manual and was wondering if there is any difference and if so which is the better one to order ... Shop manual, repair manual, service manual, etc ... are some geared more towards mechanics/assume you know certain terms or concepts and others more descriptive written for shadetree mechanics?

Re: factory manuals ...

I am partial to shop manual. They seem to always have the more indepth stuff you need and often have step by step reading for each job. I have through the years bought several other types, like clymers ect and they will help a person somedays. However usally cover many differnt motors and it's up to you to figure out what one! Most of my experience comes from my motorcycle shop. As far as all repair books seem to be the same in information as far as cars, bikes, boats, lawn and garden ect. Good luck and i hope this helps a little!! Brad ;)

Thanks Brad -
So "shop" manual is interchangable with "factory" manual? ... I want to say that I've see a few other names or titles for the "factory" manual --was just wondering if there were different versions available from the factory/manufacturer?

Hi Spete
Factory or OEM are publications put out by the manufacturer. After market publications are just that. Now there are several types of manuals. Shop or repair manuals are what you need to make repairs minor and major. Parts manuals will give exploded views of the major components and the part names and numbers. They are to help order parts by. Rigging manuals give instructions on installation of motor and related gear.Owners or opperators manuals basicly tell you how to opperate correctly and give basic maint. info, etc. Everybody prefers the factory or OEM repair manual (I do too). The realality is there isn't always one available. I use them all. Some of the guys don't care for having multi units covered in the same book. A lot of factory books do the same thing. Good more info less darn books. Plus if you get a book that covers sevral years, between 1956-1972 2hp-40hp odds are pretty good you'll have the info you need when you need it. There are tons more manuals pertaining to anything to with outboards and operating dealerships. The best manual for you the beginer? This would be the one you can get your hands on fastest, that you can understand.
