i have two motors that have compression issues.
johnson 1980 25 hp 60/70
johnson 1996 15 hp 60/80
i am hoping that it is just a head gasket issue. thoughts on these? it appears that the middle blew out, and caused the low compression?
thanks

Not having them in my hand and just looking at the pics, I'd say they're both blown.

boobie,
thanks my guess as well. middle looks blown out. hope this will get the numbers back up and idle issues go away. amazing it still ran,

It is common. When I dress the heads, the area between cylinders is always the last spot to even out. They are always low there. Be sure to dress the head before installing a new gasket. How do the cylinder walls look? Rings still bounce?

why is that? the low spot? yes dressing the head is the worst.... requires patience...

walls look good on both motors. the 15 is like new. the 25 not bad, not great, but not bad. no scoring that i can see.
thanks

I would warrant a guess that it is due to the head actually bending and twisting due to the heating/cooling cycles. That is the center, and the joint/weak spot where it will bend/twist.

hightrim,
the 25 hp, 1980, i dont know anything about it. i bought the motor for 100, so i didnt expect much, outside of it needing work. the stat had failed (as in wedged in) would run, pee water fine, but would over heat to the point of shutting down. at first i just changed the coils, but it did the same thing and shut down. i removed the head and this is what i found. so... i will need to drill and retap one of the water jacket bolts, dress the head and install new coils. should turn out into a nice runner i hope.

as for the 15, 1996, its a buddy that i helped service the motor. interesting enough, i checked the compression first, had 130/130 serviced the motor. three shops had tried to get the idle down under 1000 rpm at idle. i replaced the carb cover and installed a missing gasket for the bottom of the bowl. replaced the water pump. when it left the motor ran great, pumped water and idled a nice and low 650 rpm.
he takes it out for a duck hunt (got 14 that day!) and after running hard for about 15 minutes it died and here it is. blown head gasket... the stat was replaced prior to myself. the strange thing is why or how did the gasket all of a sudden blow? newer motor with low hours. i have some vintage 50's motors that still run and are fine not to mention countless 80's motors that are fine.

Maybe he sucked up weeds and it stopped pumping, overheated and blew the gasket? I could only guess from here, sorry not sure. Usually due to overheat for whatever reason. Obstruction in cooling cirucuit/water jacket? Lubrication issues?

Just a few to start.

chris,
yes, i pulled the stat and ran the motor for a bit and it seemed to pump water fine. many mysteries of the wonderful world of outboards!

Can't tell by the pictures very well, but it looks like the one on the right is def blown. It is a small motor so the overheat can effect the block. Put a flat edge on the block and measure for warping. Put a flat edge on the head and see if there is warping. If it is the head that is warped, simply flatten it with a block of wood and some emory or have it machined.

You have the heads off. Make sure the heads and the block are flat. Put on some new gaskets (cheap ) and see if the compression changes.

ordered a new head for the little 15hp. as well as tstat, and associated gaskets.
as for the 25, i think i will drop it off at the machine shop. its too big to dress it at home. about the size of the emery sheets im using.
