Well...it's been a fun week (even though mainly business) , but I'm getting near the end of my stay and I'm heading back to the "Land of the Long White Cloud" tomorrow afternoon (Friday). It's a direct flight from San Francisco to Auckland - which takes a mere... 12 hours  across the date line direct from Friday to Sunday.

Bob in Calif - thanks again for showing me around some of the more colourful and spectacular parts of this area. It's certainly widened my appreciation of California.

Crab - you were right about the big old redwood trees.

BTW: My next American visit is to the East Coast later this year. They tell me here that it's totally different to the west - I'll have to check it out ;)

Kiwi, as redwoods go, the one in your pic is a small one. The get up around 40-ft or so in diameter.

Yep! You couldn't be more right. Totally different.

Come to the midwest... another complete change.

I'm curious... what does "Land of the Long White Cloud" mean?

Sean

Re: Farewell USA

Thanks for all your good wishes everyone :) - I'm back in NZ now and the flight home was not too bad, apart from the duration

Sean,
Good question...
"Land of the Long White Cloud" is the literal translation of "Aotearoa" (pronounced A-oh-tee-a-rower) which is the name the native polynesian people of this country (the Maori) call New Zealand.

As for why they called it that - there are various explanations ranging from Maori legends to the more scientific.

Wikipedia have a good rundown on the possible explanations;
Wikipedia Aotearoa

Yes, the mid-west is another area I want to visit at some stage - as well as the south (and all the others areas :D ).

HOLEY MOLEY,, look at the head on that.. they actually let you in this country ,TWICE..!! :) ..

glad you liked it,, KIWI.. glad you saw redwoods.. if'n what you saw was just a stand an not a forest of'em.. then you really didn't experiance it.. but cool just the same..

what i like most about a redwood forest is not so the trees,, but the undergrowth.. ferns, moss, shamrocks.. an of coarse the trees..

did you make it to half moon bay or santa cruz..??

nice of BOB o show you around..

can't wait for my turn,maybe..

Crab

Yeah twice - lucky for me they're not fussy about who they let in!!

I didn't get to Muir forest but this one where the picture was taken had a pretty awesome atmosphere.

Yes we went to Half Moon Bay - very impressive along the Pacific coastline. Great country people out that way too - had a whisky at the General Store. I didn't get to Santa Cruz, but did get out to San Jose.

I just found out I could be going to Philadelphia in late May. Is that far from Delaware?

Re: Farewell USA

Glad you had a good visit. Philly isn't too far from Central PA. When you learn the details give a shout and we easterners will see what we can do to make your east coast stay a pleasant one.
