Hey everyone,

I just bought a 2004 Maxum 1800 SR3. The oil gauge is a little flaky. It won't read anything but if you give it a whack...it starts working. I would kind of like to know if my oil pressure drops and not have to start smacking it. It's a Faria guage, but I am not finding this particular model anywhere online. The pointer on this gauge has a silver holder...I would really like to keep the gauges all matching. I've attached a pic if anyone has any ideas.

Thanks!!
Dave

It's often hard to find matching gauges. Usually settle for something close. Have you checked the wiring connections on the back of the gauge to see if anything is loose?

Damn, I was kind of hoping that wasn't the case. It looks like I may also be able to send it in to Faria for repair. Not sure if it's a wiring thing..I can't start the engine up yet, still too cold here for that. But I saw it happen when I took it for a test ride in the fall before it was winterized.

To test the gauge with the engine off, turn the ignition key on to power up the gauges, using a jumper wire with a clip, connect the jumper wire to the signal side of the gauge which should be a blue wire at the rear of the gauge, connect the other end of the jumper wire to ground and the gauge should max out if everything is working correctly. The gauge may have an S on it near the wire connector stud that stands for signal.

Also over tightened nuts holding the gauge and/or wires in place could keep the needle from moving and tapping on the gauge could free it up sometimes.

If you can verify that the problem is inside the gauge, then send it in to Faria and have them refurbish it. It could cost that same as a new one, but it will at least match the other gauges. If you test it and find it was just a corroded connection, then you can easily clean up the connections and then enjoy great boating times again. JMHO!

Thanks. Just talked with Faria, and it is apparently a custom designed gauge, I'm going to have to pull it out and have it sent in for repair.
