The speedo on my boat DOES work, but when compared to GPS it's about 10mph out (shows lower than GPS)at top speed. Is there anything I can do to "calibrate" the speedo? Volvo Penta SX-A drive.

I've never seen a pitot style speedo that was accurate. There are too many things that you can't control that will affect the reading. Some of these things are a current from your bow will cause the reading to be too high, from the stern too low, small pieces of dirt or marine life will make the reading off as well. I never pay any attention to mine and just watch the gps.

When ours worked, it was actually reasonably accurate. Close enough that I could tell which way the tide was running, and about how fast based on the difference from GPS. On a slack tide at cruise speed it was about 1 mph off. Thats the only remotely accurate one I've ever seen, but considering how seldom its worked over the last 8 years, I can't say its useful. Whenever cash allows, that hole is going to be re-purposed for a FloScan, which is actually a useful instrument.
