Hey Guys I have a 1989 Evinrude 88hp SPL I was about to hook up a new tach .. looked on faria's web site to see what to set the tach to for my engine.. on the 88hp and 115hp the recommend voltage regulator kit ? .. is this necessary will it fry my tach or something with out it? and where do I find one .. I did a google search and got all kinds of results.. can I live without it ?

Here is also the link to the PDF it also has the settings for tachs for most makes and models of engines , I see this question a lot on here

Pictures are Power pack and rectifier no voltage regulator .. mmmm is there a automotive part solution to regulate the power ( cheaper than a OMC part ) ... I assume this would keep the voltage from spiking ?

I don't know, but it seems odd to me that anybody would make accessories for outboards without including a built-in voltage regulator of some sort, if it is necessary to the items operation or longevity. I mean, it is well known that the majority of outboards run well up to around 16 volts or so. But who am I to say, I don't make the stuff.

A simple solution for now is the tiny tach,
it counts sparkplug pulses with an inductive clamp, costs about $40.
Google tiny tach. or tinytach .

You can switch to a regulated rectifier, or add a regulator to your unregulated rectifier. It is actually cheaper to switch to a regulated rectifier than to regulate what you have.

I ran OMC/BRP and Teleflex tachometers on unregulated rectifiers without problems, but I have not use a Faria Tach on one.
