1978 Johnson, 85HP with the separate fast idle lever for cold starts. This lever always want to creep up so that when I place the shift lever in nuetral the engine idles too fast. I just need to push the lever down and all is fine. Just a little pain. How can I fix this? Thanks, Bert :D

There should be a screw inside the box that you could tighten putting tension on the lever. Or a black nob on the outside of the box.

Re: Fast idle lever won't stay down

My mercontroller has a detent device. It's like a ball bearing with a spring behind it. Opposite it the fast idle lever has a hemispherical depression. If you loose the spring or ball when you have it apart the fast idle lever creeps up on you when you throttle forward.

The problem I have is that the fast idle lever is a little sloppy and the seat for the ball is worn.

See if your controller has something like this.

Adjust your throttle linkage at the motor using the trunnion nut. It is diretly related to the fast idle lever. If too tight in forward, it will cause the creep up problem..

Mine had a little clip that fit over the key switch..I missed putting it on when I changed cables.
The clip hold it down.
Is yours missing or maybe a different design?
