Mr joe reeves says before timing if you have fast start you must disable it. So what is fast start, how does it work and how would you disable it if you did have it.

Look for the white/black wire on the port side temp sender, disconnect it and ground out the wire coming from the wireing harness. If you don't have the wire, you don't have Quick Start.

So what is fast start, how does it work
Its a feature that uses 9volts from timer base to pack to advance timing around 6-9? to ensure reliable starts. When cylinder head temp reaches 96? it kicks out. It activates for 5 seconds every time engine starts regardless of engine temp.
how would you disable it if you did have it.
Ground the white /black wire on cylinder head to block.....

Re: fast start disable

I recently had occasion to disable the Fast Start on my 1998 Johnson 130. It took three steps.

I pulled the white/black wire from the bayonet plug at the left upper cylinder.

The white/black wire going to the power head I made a jumper and grounded the wire.

I removed the Power Pack cover and pulled apart the yellow/red wire (coming from the power pack) at the bayonet plug.

Those three steps disabled my Fast Start.

I reassembled the power pack cover and ground wire (with the yellow/red wire detached) and proceeded with the Joe Reeves method.

After setting the timing I reattached the yellow/red wire, and the white/black wire.

Re: fast start disable

Have you considered using Daselbee's method for setting the WOT timing? It seems like it's a little easier.
Warm up the engine untill quick start drops out.
Shut off the engine.
Disconnect the timer base linkage.
Start the engine.
Wait 5 seconds for the Quickstart to drop out.
Leave the throttles closed and manually advance the timer base to the stop and check/adj the stop to the spec for your engine.
No need to subtract 4 degrees because the engine is running.
I haven't tried this method yet, but will be in the next few weeks.
If the end result is the same, it seems like less work.
