So I've only done this once, but I'm certain that others can relate.

I was salmon fishing on the lower columbia and after getting a hit and losing the fish, I reeled in to reset my gear. suddenly my fishfinder turns almost solid black with a whole school passing under my boat!

So as quick as I can, I hook up a k14 flatfish, a trolling spreader and a sinker dropper with lead attached and toss the whole arrangement overboard... and watched it sink straight to the bottom, since it was not yet attached to the mainline. Ouch!

Re: fasten terminal tackle to mainline BEFORE throwing overboard

My bro has always believed very stongly in making appropriate sacrifices to the fish gods and this is but another example...

He always complains bitterly when I manage to hook some of his gear in the trees or on the bottom or on passing snags (like that time we lost all four mooching rigs on the same snag in the Cowlitz because I was trying to row for the other side of the snag and didn't get there in time...) but, really, I'm only doing it for his own good. If I threw away my own gear that would be tantamount to selfishly hogging all the sacrifice-based luck for myself wouldn't it?
