Started work on my Fastwin again. Haven't really got any where. Pistons have really got tight on me. Trying to pull it over but now my shoulder is shot. It's taking everything I have to move that pistons some what fast. They are moving but they are very stiff. Any help?

What year/model number?

That question is really relative to experience with motors. DO you have others, that you are comparing it to in terms of stiffness? Not to be rude, but some guys that have not had one before may feel like it is tight to them when it is not. WHat is the compression? Is this a new motor to you?

If it is really tight, might be time to open it up and inspect the bearings.

Is this motor new to you, or was it easier to start previously? The 18's are one of the hardest motors to pull over in my experience. Harder than the 40 hp Big Twins, or even the 4 cylinder 50 Merc I had.

It's a 15024 18hp Fastwin 58 I believe. I'm comparing it to my 58 10hp seahorse. It is new ish to me. I worked on it last August and it didn't seem to be this stiff but maybe it was. I pulled the plugs, still stiff but much better. What is really odd to me, I pull the choke and I can hardly pull the rope. I'm a pretty strong guy too. I replaced all the seals in the lower unit.

I would say something is binding. I'd start by dropping the lower unit to see if that makes a difference. Also, have you ever had the motor running? Possible that if it's been sitting awhile that there's rust buildup on the cylinder walls, stuck rings, any number of things. I had a 9.5 come into my shop last summer that had the water pump impeller swell up and was making it very difficult to pull over. A new OEM impeller solved the issue.

I sprayed some WD-40 in the cylinders and it did help! A lot. Impeller is new shouldnt be the problem, but I will look at it! I never got it to run last year. I haven't worked on it much till lately. Yes I will drop off the lower unit and try it, I was told to do that by another guy. It did sit for a full year. Anyone think I have a major issue?

I have the piston windows/cylinder windows. Should I open those up?

Looked in the windows both pistons look new! And rings so that great news. That didn't solve my problem, so I dropped my lower unit out again. Now pulls like a dream...... So any idea what the problem is?

Obviously, the lower unit must be the problem and will need to come apart to see what's wrong. But before tearing into it, remove the water pump. With the pump off, the rest of the unit should turn with barely any effort. If that is the case, see what's wrong with the pump.

Okay I will do that. Has anyone tried testing the water pump with a cordless drill? Put it on the drive shaft and see if the pump will pull water. I thought of that last night, not sure if it will work

So you removed the water pump and the driveshaft spins easily? How did the impeller look?

Year / model # must be posted.--On some fastwins the recoil must be timed to make for easier starting.

1958/ 15024. So pulled the water pump.. the drive shaft pin moved out of the Impeller grove. So I fixed that put it back together, now I'm able to move it by hand easy. I used my drill to test the water pump. Worked! Also wasn't sure, should the top if the water pump housing push water out of it? The top where the fins are it was bubbling out the top.
