1996 Four Winns Horizon powered by V8 Ford 302 OMC with Cobra Outdrive (No problems by the way with the OMC engine or outdrive and still finding parts)

Anyway recently I have noticed that my tach guage sometimes spikes by 300-500 rpms and then returns back to normal. When the guage spikes there is no change in the engine sound so I'm pretty confident that the engine is not causing the spike.

What could cause this spike? Where would someone suggest to start looking? It only happens every so often so it's not that big of a deal but I want to figure it out to make sure it's not a warning to something else being wrong.

Thanks.

Tachs go bad.

It happens.

I think the setup on your engine is basic enough to say that there are no electronics throwing a bad signal down the wire. The tach is the most likely problem since the engine is just humming along.

See what I did there? I didn't say it was the only possible problem. :)

Could easily be a bad tach or a bad connection.

Your outdrive is basically the Volvo because that year was during the Volvo/OMC joint venture.
