I have a 1998 Yamaha 150 S150TXRW. The ignition swithch assembly part #704-82510-02-00 is failing quickly. While awaiting for the part to arrive, how can I hot wire it if I get stuck. When you turn the key sometimes no power to dash, sometimes power to dash and will not turn over, sometimes it will turn over for just a second or 2 then stop.

if I knoew which wires were which I could get ground and voltage to them by possibly jumping from buss bar under the console. I always carry extra wire, crimps, etc with me.

Re: Faulty Keyed ignition switch help

No hotwiring necessary. Disconnect the engine harness plug on the engine to make sure the kill switch wiring is out of the picture. Make yourself a jump start switch that looks like the one below. Jump the solenoid and away you go. Disconnect the fuel line to kill the engine. But if you want the real solution, wait for the replacement switch.

Re: Faulty Keyed ignition switch help

You have a two stroke engine. The ignition circuit is OPEN for a magneto system to run, not CLOSED like an auto or I/O coil ignition. Pulling the main plug OPENS all the circuits to the front of the boat. The problem is how to kill the engine. Hence my recommendation to pull the full line. Besides, the jump start switch is great to have on the boat just in case the ignition circuit ever does give you grief.

Re: Faulty Keyed ignition switch help

Hey thanks for the help. I have searched and have not seen a similar problem like this nor a solution that you have given.

1 more question. The kill switch seems to be ok. After starting with the self made starter switch, can I plug the main harness at the engine back in so my guages and trim will work from the center console? I then maybe able to turn it off with the regular switch assembly.

The fault of the switch seems to be just mainly engaging the starter.

Re: Faulty Keyed ignition switch help

Then leave the main harness plug connected. Turn the key to run, hit the jump start switch to start the engine. The jump start switch is essentially doing exactly the same thing the key switch is doing, only at the engine. If the key switch works to kill the engine use it. Or use the kill switch.

How have you proven the ignition switch is faulty. Just because you have an intermittent start condition doesn't mean the switch is bad. You may have a bad solenoid or marginal battery cable connections. Put a test light on the small terminal on the start solenoid. Have someone turn the key to start. If the test light lights, the switch isn't the problem.
