hi,

Waking up on a weekend morning at approx 6am, quick coffee and bacon sandwich, 5 minute walk while listening to the birds and nature, back to the boat, start the blower, open up the windows and top, look up at the clear blue sky, start the engine, put my coffee in the cup holder, remove the ropes and slowly leave the marina while thinking "This is gonna be a great day"...off course all this with my wife, 2 kids and dog!

tell me yours...

Is there a "Dear Hustler" section here? No? Maybe I'll leave one of my other favorites.... ;)

SeaJack,

This is one heck of a great post title....

Like, if you could take a picture of just one moment to represent your entire boating life... Did it already happen? Is it coming up?

You know, I can't even think of a favorite moment, yet. But while I'm thinking about it, I'm smiling. I think in anticipation of what I'll remember.

At any rate, thanks SeaJack. You gave me something to think about and smile about.

They've all been great, but successfully backing into a slip in a 35 knot wind with tons of onlookers while the other boats were getting blown away is a memory that pops into my head on a regular basis.

CPT Kickback,

I don't know why, but that reminds me of back in high school, back in the dark ages, I was carrying some pep band players and cheerleaders in my huge boat-of-a-car, and coasted dead right up to the gas pump as I ran out of gas. Absolutely perfect.

Of course that was luck, but the timing was perfect.

CPT Kickback - do you golf? If so, I'll bet you're a great putter. It takes guts and skill to sink one on a short severely sloping putt.

But I'm sure you told everyone that your sense of timing is more accurate than your fuel gauge and that you do this all the time. lol

As I always said, "if you can't make it, fake it".

Anyway, congrats on your success way back then.

Sorry, no golf for many, many years. But boating seems to come to me more naturally than putting ever did.

Re: Favorite boating moment

I would say most memorable, not necessarily favorite, was when I had to rope pull start the force 50 on the back of my pontoon at the dock of a busy fancy restaurant while the dock boys watch on not knowing what to do. My little redneck moment. We laugh about it today, but hey we were on the water.. Luckily it was still somewhat warm, it kicked off on the first pull :)

As I always said, "if you can't make it, fake it".

I went to Robert E. Peary High School. He's the guy who reportedly was the first to reach the north pole. The school had his anchor on the front lawn, and his ship mast as our flag pole. Our mascot is the Husky Dog. All that and more.

In our school song was the line, "to find a way or make one, our motto ever will be..."

So it was quite irking when controversy erupted on whether Peary actually made it to the Pole at all! Big National Geographic scandal back in the day.

So, of course, in the school, we all changed the words to "to find a way or FAKE one...."

My favorite boating moment starts right when the motor does, happens every time.

Still waiting to have that time when it doesn't start.

Never had an issue yet, knock on wood.

Taking the 'inside' route last summer from our dock on the south shore, out past the Hamptons and Moriches, through the Shinnecock canal and lock, into the Peconic Bay and on to Greenport at the end of the north fork. A beautiful trip, great weather. It was Lin's and my first 'voyage'. The boat ran flawlessly and our seamanship was on the money every step of the way. We're repeating the trip at the end of July... can't wait!

The fog's just lifting. Throw off your bow line; throw off your stern. You head out to South channel, past Rocky Neck, Ten Pound Island. Past Niles Pond where I skated as a kid. Blow your air-horn and throw a wave to the lighthouse keeper's kid on Thatcher Island. Then the birds show up: black backs, herring gulls, big dump ducks. The sun hits ya - head North. Open up to 12 - steamin' now. The guys are busy; you're in charge. Ya know what? You're a goddam swordboat captain! Is there any thing better in the world?

Thats a hard one to beat. We like it, when we find that beach, that you can only get to by boat. All yours to explore, well maybe one free-loader. This is on Lake Michigan, about 4 weeks ago.DSCF0264.jpgDSCF0261.jpg

Re: Favorite boating moment

I have had quite a few great moments. One was 20+ years ago when I was first dating my wife. I took her and my best (male) friend water skiing. Of course her bikini top couldn't take the strain of water skiing, but she had on a ski vest, so she tossed her top onto the boat. My friend picked it up and started swinging it around while whooping loudly. That did not play well with his fiance, but I enjoyed it throughly. Of course all the girls (except the fiance) had to follow suit, when it was their turn to ski.....

Getting up early in the morning, at around 6:45.. Having pancakes, heading out my front door to my dock to see the water is perfectly still with no wind, and I will go for hours... Second closest is wave jumping on a very windy day in the evening!

A Midnight run on a full moon night. w/some friends. Planning one this Sat. Launch around 6:30, run down river to the lake and over to our favorite Seafood restaurant. Watch the sun go down, great food. Back to the middle of the lake to catch the full moon rising. Anchor out, pop a cork, listen to some good music. Then its back up river, spotting gators w/ the Q-beam. Its always 15-20 degrees cooler w/ a nice breeze at night.

Yeah, I love that quote. I get a little tiny bit of that feeling every time I leave the dock...

Cast off the bow lines, drop the stern and spring lines. Blow the horn and ease out of the slip. The sun's in my face. Kick the port engine a little to make the swing into the channel. Head south, past the 'big guns' at the next dock. 'Kristin Ann' is still slipped- is Gene going out today? The gulls are squawking. Throw a wave to Frank at the fuel dock. Past the last bulkhead where the kids and oldtimers are fishing, and spot the red nun in the east-west channel. Slide past the final bulkhead and out of the no wake zone. Everybody ready? Bang the throttles, bring her on plane and make the slow swing into the main channel. Life's good!

LOL
