Anyone know of a good substitute for the felt cam wiper that goes in the Phelon Magneto? I've got a Wizard WG-7 (Merc KG-7). I've seen it listed as part number M-30-571, and as 398-723. Mine were missing in the motor I got,so I don't know what to size by.
Thanks,
Dean

where did you find these parts?

a substitute would simply be removing the wiper altogether and lube up the distributor cam with graphite grease

I can buy them from the link below, but it's a $30 minimum order. I thought about using the graphite, but you have to pull the flywheel to lube it, and I believe that the felt soaked in vasoline would last longer. I could be wrong...

It shouldn't be hard to improvise on that one. Lots of engines use cam wipers - lawn mower engines and such. Might be able to find something similar at a small engine repair shop. Definitely gotta keep it in there, though. Nothing worse than losing a cylinder while out on the water when the point gap closes up on you.

is there a special oil you have to use to lubricate your oiler wick? or will just any oil do the trick?

wow melted vasoline... has anyone else heard of this? i was looking for a long time for what oil to use.... thank you very much.... but in a pinch i talked to 2 merc techs in this area and they said if there is no wick or if you are not able to get a wick, use graphite grease

i wonder why melted vaseline? must have silicone based properties

they said the graphite grease best adheres to the cam without wearing or flying off

It's from a 33 page Maintenance Service Instruction manual

"1. Lubrication
After each 100 hours of operation, remove cam oiler felt and submerge in vasoline, brought to a liquid state by heating, Remove excess by drawing felt between fingers. If it is found that an excess of grease has accumulated around the cam, this should be wiped off with a cloth before applying new lubricant, Keep the oil and grease away from the contact point surfaces."

My Mercury Service manual C-90-25500 says to put a drop of 60 wt oil on the felt.
I think that graphite grease would probably due a better job than either vasoline or 60wt.

thats the only problem with owning an ignition system that has points :( needs a little maintenance more then electronic ignition, but i was told with the graphite grease just take a q-tip and get a nice thin coat on the cam obviously not too much even tho graphite grease seems to adhere better and can withstand extreme temperatures

so your other merc manual simply suggests using 60 wt oil, what exactly is this stuff?

ok just reasearced it and 60 wt is basically just 20w-50 a very thick oil

so is this another alternative oil to use on the cam wiper? either this or the vaseline trick will work?

Either melted vasoline or a drop of 60 wt, according to 30 year old instructions. But, they didn't have graphite grease back then. I do buy parts from oldmercs, but they don't sell the cam wiper. Doug Russell.com sells them, but they have a $30 minimum order.
