feul gauge works intermittently

I have a 1998-1999 yamaha 225 hp salt water series. The gauges seem to work well except for the gauge which measures miles per gallon which seems to work intermittently, Any suggestions on how to fix this problem

carefully check all wiring connections for tightness and corrosion, if all tests ok its either the sender or the gauge.
so far there is not a good way to test either.
does your display disapear? does it revert to zero?
the fuel management meter has a lot of functions, are any other functions working improperly?
the miles per gallon is a calculated function based on inputs from either a speedometer or GPS unit. if all thats affected is the MPG function it could bve a speedo or GPS malfunction as well.

The fuel gauge reverts to zero. All other functions are working properly inmy fuel management system. This unit is tied into a speedometer and not gps. Ican calculate the miles per gallon by dividing or using brain power
