First off, I just bought a week ago it is my first boat its a 1973 Sanders 14ft, with a 1988 35hp Evinrude. Well I took it out on the water and it took a good 5-10 minutes to get it going... and I had to take the cover off and manually put the choke all the way down, I finally got it started. So that was the first problem.

Second, was when I went into the idle speed only zone, I put it into Idle and quickly it started building up and misfiring. After about 2 minutes or less it died. Then I started it again and it started right up and then I put it into idle and it died again.

Third and finally the bendex will pop up the first few times. Then it will quit popping up and you need to use a screw driver to pop it up again. It gets annoying after awhile.

Im 17 years old, this is MY first boat but I have been around boats for a few years...but im far from knowlagable about engines.

Thanks for all your input!

Howdy, Defender.

Your first problem could be solved by getting and studying an Owner's Manual. Seems likely your starting procedure could use some work.

Also sounds like your engine needs a linkage and synchronization adjustment procedure. Described in detail in the Service Manual. It may need carburetors overhauled as well. It is running too lean at idle.

Try lubricating the Bendix shaft with light oil. The gear should not stick.

If you can supply us the engine model number we may be able to help you out with specific problems.

A weak battery or a starter that's in need of rebuild will also cause the bendix to not rise. You need to make sure the battery is charged and that the battery cable connections (both ends) are clean and tight. Looking doesn't count here. You need to disconnect them, clean them, and reconnect them.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

also have you check you compression, and spark, with a tester. if you have good compression over 100 and with in 10 % of each other, spark is blue, and jumps 7/16 inch. then you need to look at the carb, possible complete cleaning and rebuild kit.

Hi, and thanks Silvertip, the dealer that I bought the boat from said something about a black knob on top of the butterfly choke that changes the amount of gas into the engine, which should help the idle problem. I will check that out next time I'm on the water. Which should be Friday or Saturday. Could you help me with the starting procedure, I think I am in need of some advice. I am going to have a tune up tomorrow and hopefully I can get it to run better. In the mean time...I've given it a charge overnight, and it was a brand new battery that had just been sitting for 6ish months.

Thanks for all your help Silvertip and everyone!

edit: to tashasdaddy: well the solenoid spins but it doesn't pop up.

Good to see a young man getting his feet wet so to speak. Like JB said, put some light oil on the starter shaft. If you want to just spray some WD40 on it and see if it lets the bendix kick it up. If it does then apply some oil (gun or sewing machine oil is good) as WD40 is not a lubricant.
