Few questions with floor replacement

We just finish replacing the stingers and we're moving onto the floor but I have a few questions first.

We're thinking that instead of using carpet, spray some sort of nonslip paint or something similar onto the plywood.
1) What do you guys think about this idea? All the boats I've seen have some sort of marine carpet but I find it too much of a hassel to clean.
2) What products would you guys recommend for the non-slip floor?
3) Should we fiber glass the floor before we spray this non slip product?

By fiberglassing, I mean using the mats and epoxy+hardener+fiber powder stuff (forgot waht its called right now)

Thanks

Ill post pics of our progress in a few hours.

Re: Few questions with floor replacement

Fiberglassing cardboard (on opposing sides) would yield a "composite", which is very strong. Depends on the direction of the ribs though, I guess it would collapse if laid the wrong direction.

I used sand sprinkled on top of wet paint, swept away excess when dry, then rolled another coat on top. Came out very good - so good, in fact, that the wife prefers it over carpet. And, much easier to clean. I used coarse "play sand" from Home Depot.

But what do you do to prepare the floor before you sprayed on the paint?

Tuff Coat from Cabelas! Great stuff.

We used "KILZ 2" as an undercoater, on the bare pressure treated plywood.

You can seal the wood if you wish with resin, then paint if you'd like.

I have a 1/2 gallon of epoxy resin in my shop but chose not to seal the deck.

If you want something a little fancier, try Interlux non-slip paint. It comes in a variety of colors and is a single coat application (after primer). There are other mfrs of this type of paint, but Interlux has won my business.

The interlux is great stuff, way better than using sand. It contains little rubber spheres that are a lot easier on bare feet. You can also just buy the spheres separate. I've done both.

If you go the interlux route, it really needs a full week of cure time before heavy use. Learned that one the hard way.

I would suggest you use composite board instead of plywood then apply any type of non slip laminate and you would have no worries about replacing every again as it would not absorb water

Re: Few questions with floor replacement

Its been almost a year since I've worked on the boat (Due to school). But I've finally got the summer off so I plan on finishing before the season comes to an end.

Few questions,

1) How long does the interlux stuff last?
2) Still havent gotten an answer. Am I suppose to fiberglass the floor before applying the spray/carpet?

Re: Few questions with floor replacement

I have another thread asking about the carpet vs vinyl thing (yes I did a search to see comparisons).

I would think that while great for people the bumpy non-slip stuff would be hard on a fish and may even kill many by way of infections getting through their damaged skin.

I have never used or been on a boat with the stuff.....how is it on the fish?

I cant say how long the interlux will last, but I assume many years..

You're answer to FBglassing the DECK before painting is easy, it's up to you.

You want it to last as long as possible, then mat & resin. There are lots of threads here on how to and what others have done..

I just used Restoleum paint with a non skid additive called Sharkskin...

I did seal the boards with water sealer though

I am not kidding. Fish did not evolve to flop around on a deck. Fishing guys are always going on about being careful when handling (freshwater) fish so as to avoid damaging the skin or protective slim on them.

PS: remember the old wives tales about rust or fish stomach acids dissolving hooks that are embedded or swallowed? Those swallowed hooks cause a painful death that fishermen do not witness.
