Do all fiberglass boats leak? I have never owned a fiberglass boat. A friend of mine who owns several says they all leak. Says fiberglass with gel coat is not water tight. I don't understand this, we have fiberglass tanks that hold dangerous chemicals all over the place. Non of them leak.

No they don't all leak and the ones that do, normally leak around fittings, outdrives and drain plugs. As far as gel coat and fiberglass not being water proof, well nothing is really waterproof, some things are more water resistant than others, but water will permeate almost everthing. For the most part, you can call a fiberglass boat, chemical tank or other item waterproof, not enough water (or other substance) can migrate through it to be meaningful and whatever did would not be visible. Fiberglass will absorb water over time and it can wick down the fibers, but not to the point of having visible water in the hull. Plastic gas tanks are considered water proof (fuel proof), but chemicals in the fuel can pass through the plastic and be lost in the air.

as stated, thru hull fittings, not properly maintained, are #1 leak spot. #2 and a close to #1, is the joint between the top cap and the hull, under the rub rail. when getting on and off plane water comes up to this area, on certain parts of the boat. at this point if not sealed as some aren't will leak thru the joint. a good beam of 3m 4200 usually solves this problem. i just found this on my 23' Chris Craft.
