had the floor replace once was told they would replace all dryrot well they did not do that!!!

i am haveing to replace the wood on the inside for the transom (dryrot)
to get to that the floor had to come out!! i am at the point were it is all rooten wood is out!!!! gone no more !!!!!! so here is what the transom was
gellcoat-on the outside, then 1 layer of plywood and then fiberglass layer, then 2 more layers of plywood and a coating of resin!!!!!!!

i got 3 layers of marine board cut to size for the transom i am planning to put it back thae way it all came out!!!! but this time all the wood i plan to seal it all in fiberglass so no water can get to the wood including the new floor
at this point i am truly in to deep!!!!!! cost wize it is killing me my wife wants to use what is left for a bond fire and a winne roast and i am that winne

epoxy or poylester resin i was told form a guy at napa i should use the epoxy for the transom and the i can use the cheap polyester for the rest of the job!!!!!

any one here have a better way or right way that will still be cheap to do???

Re: Fiberglass help PLEASE!!!!

RULE - Epoxy will adhere to just about ANYTHING Polyester Resin will NOT stick to Epoxy. If you use expoxy on the Transom it will be almost impossible to use the poly resin for the rest of it. If you want to save money use the Poly. You will still have a strong boat and it WILL be waterproof as long as you do a good job of coating and sealing everything as you go.

Good Luck with the Wife and your winnee:D

Join the club of "I have a project boat that sucking up money and my wife is threatening to blow it up".

As stated earlier, using polyester resin should be fine as long as you do a good job sealing everything up.

Personally I've used epoxy on my transom replacement, and polyester on the deck, but the design of my boat makes it possible without the concerns of polyester not sticking to epoxy.

To each his own. That's what's great about this site. You can get opinions and still do what you want. Just be ready to admit your mistakes and post it for the rest of us as a "what not to do"!

Oh yeah, and great name by the way "in too deep" is that what you're going to name the boat?

And since you're a newbie, drop all the exclamations, make sure you use a normal font, and based on some previous threads, please add your location to your profile.

Not that we're picky or anything. LOL:p

Your fine with poly...just..um..not "cheap" poly like ..um..stuff you buy at home d or most hardware/auto stores..

Get some low VOC if you can. ( pot life is longer )

The reason I say is that you will find that the cheaper stuff will Kick FAST !

Remember your hardener is 1.5 % ( basically 10cc/qt ) @ 75 deg. So give or take depending on location and temp.

One other thing..make sure your READY for the whole thing, start to finish, before you mix...

Re: Fiberglass help PLEASE!!!!

I too got into that.. transom, deck and stringers.

Only thing I would do different.
Instead of buying the packs of fiberglass cloth at the store (8 sq yrds a package) I would buy bulk from internet.
Then I would order 5 gallons of poly resin.
I went through 4 gallons of resin on my boat. At 28 bucks a gallon at the store, 5 gallon would have been cheaper. (also included building seats and covering them in resin.

Re: Fiberglass help PLEASE!!!!

Like Y DR said, many of the resins sold at the box stores have a very short gel time, I have no idea where they came up with the idea people want this type of product, but that's what the Bondo brand product is like. Unless you buy resin from an actual fiberglass supply store (local or on line) you won't know what it is you're buying, so if possible buy it from a good supplier. Low VOC (low emission) won't have an effect on gel time and you won't know if it is or not and it shouldn't be a concern.

As for catalyst % in a quart, 10cc is slightly less than 1%, 1% is 11.12cc 1.5 % is 16.67cc

1% is about as low as you want to go for a good cure, if that's too fast, then mix smaller amounts, don?t use less catalyst.
