My opinion --- Wood is fine if you take care of the boat. There are 100 year old boats out there that look great because they were taken care of. If it is a fiberglass boat you can do a better job than the factory encasing it in fiberglass. If an aluminum boat you can also encase the wood in fiberglass and make sure to seal any penetrations with 3m sealer. A properly cared for wood transsom can last your lifetime.

3M 5200 marine sealant. You can get it at Walmart. At least my Walmart has it. It is a polyurethane sealant, not silicone.

Home Depot has it too, $6-7/tube, better than $12 at Worst Marine.

Re: fiberglass or wood transom

ok.....now that i have the transom out and the outerskin on the inside all sanded and down to bare fiber do i now cut the new transom and put it in or do i encase it in fiber first ......also how do i attatch the outer skin to the transom. also since i have an automatic builge pump can i leave the plug hole out because after fishing i always shopvac out the builge area because all the water never drains all the way.....i would just like to have as few holes as possible.... and if i shouldnt where do i get that brass hole thing to put in and how do i install it.....sorry for all the (probably dumb) questions its just this is my first boat and i want to do it right.....just thought of another one how do i attatch the edges of the transom as well......

thanx again; meals on reels.....to be trademarked.....LOL

meals,
Can you post photos of your work in progress. It might come in handy if I have to work on mine. I have a 78 Sailfish that was cherried 4 weeks ago when I bought it. Now is another story.

My 16' has a '04 Yamaha 115 4 stroke on it. The original owner place some kind of steel reinforced plate across the transom.

You could probably find the bung at a plumbing supply or hardware store. They make them out of different types of materials, so you get a choice.
A piece of pipe would work too, that way it would be flush mount to eliminate being damaged and debris wouldnt hang up on it as easy. Just my ideas.

There's stuff out there called Seacast that you mix and pour to make a new transom. Might want to look into it.
