Hello everyone back again..I orignially posted 65Merc nightmare after having major problems with the engine on my boat. Now after getting that sorted out I have repaired all the body on my late 70s 15 foot Thundercraft (approx 50 man hours, its been a long winter here). My boat is just about ready for paint and I called for some quotes, I couldnt believe the prices $$2000.00. Is there any painters out there with suggestions ? I need the boat painted, just didnt plan on spending that much $$$. I even thought about doing it myself...but because the boat is fiberglass ive been told the paint cost is $450 gallon ?? HELP..HOW CAN I DO IT MYSELF

Do it yourself.

You'd be surprised at the job you can get using the roll and tip method.

West Marine has a very good painting guide.

www.westmarine.com

Also try www.interlux.com website. There are online videos to help you through. I am doing mine now. I can't wait to show everyone the before and aft pictures of our skinny skinny water center console that my son are doing! (Sand, sanding still, still sanding, sanding again, beginning to sand again, gotta sand some more, need more sand paper, did I tell you we are sanding again tonight?)

The only problem with fiberglass is sometimes paint wont stick well. To beat this use a "self-etching" primer that will etch its way into all the nooks and crannies and give you a good base to paint over.
