I pulled my 120 gal gas tank out of my 1972 233 formula. My guy at the radiator shop boiled out the inside removing the sediment that caused one of my problems. My other problem is small holes in the floor of the tank. it is custom for the deep v. the tank guy said the bottom is rotten, and he would not weld the holes but recomended replacing the bottom panel or use fiberglass cloth and resin to glass the bottom. Has anyone encountered thus before. what is the cost bennifit of fiberglass repair vs. new alum bottom of tank. I will post pics soon!!

i don't think gas tank renu will even work. get a new tank and save the BOOM. having the old tank out, that they can use as a pattern will cut cost.

Re: fiberglass repair on alum talk

Jlawrence, I have successfully repaired my old steel gas tank using Marine-Tex and Fiberglass cloth. However, that was on a spot leak, on an open outboard boat. If the tank was to start leaking again, I would know right away, and the fumes cannot build up in the bilge, beacuse the boat doesn't have one.

If your tank is leaking from multiple areas, or will be leaking from other areas soon(if nothing is done), your best (safest) bet is replacement, especially if you have a I/O or inboard.

And also, fiberglass & ethanol are not compatible. It is pretty much inevitable that you will be dealing with that issue in the future, if not already. As suggested above, I'd lean towards a new tank - aluminum or ethanol-resistant plastic.

I would see if the gastankrenu.com has a local dealer in your area. cause they will boil it out then cut all the pieces that have holes in it and replace it with new metal. after that they put this coating in the inside as well as the outside, then bakes it in a oven. I know guys that use them over here in SO CA, to do the tanks on the hot rod & custom cars. also i would try a welding shop that does custom work. they might be able to just replace that panel or even build you a new one
