My cousin and I are redoing the deck on his 19' Slickcraft. The stringers are all glassed in. We need to install the deck, pour the foam, then seal the deck.

When we seal the bottom side of the pw, do we need fiberglass cloth, or will resin only work?

Then on the top side, should we use epoxy or fiberglass?
I've read that Aero Marine is a good place to get the product. I do not see glass resin on there site, only epoxy resin.

How much will it take to cover a 65 square foot area?

Thank you.
Ken.

Re: Fiberglass v epoxy resin for decks

My recommendation is to use 1.5 oz CSM on the bottom side of the deck and I would use poly resin NOT epoxy. Poly is about half the price so you get more bang for your buck. Epoxy might be a little easier to work with but not that much. Resin without Mat or Cloth is like a car without tires. www.USComposites.com is a good source. On the top, I would use 1708 Biaxial Cloth. It's a combination mat/cloth and very easy to work with. A general rule of thumb for coverage is 6 oz of resin per sq. ft. Based on that I would think 3-4 gals should do the trick. Mat and cloth are sold by the yard and come in 50 inch width's.

I'm just sayin...:D

dear carpenterken,

When you estimate 6 oz of resin per sq ft you are figuring a single layer of csm or 1708 right? So if one had multiple layers (like a transom) one would simply multiply x number of layers, yes?
