What ounce fiberglass cloth and mat are you guys using when redoing the floor. And are you doing one layer of mat and cloth over the ply?

Re: Fiberglass weight

Are you doing deck and stringers or are you just doing the deck? If doing stringers I would recommend using a 4 cloth/mat followed by 24oz woven roving and repeat this at least twice(Mke sure to alternate cloth and roving layers!!!). If doing just the deck you might resin the bottom and edges of the deck , then put in place and glass it in with a 4-6oz cloth/mat followed by a 12oz roving then another layer of cloth/mat. Then finish it up with a nice marine carpet. Hope this helps, RR

Re: Fiberglass weight

I use one layer of chopped mat 1.5 oz I think and then a layer of woven roving 18 oz.

For just the floor, I do only one layer of 1.5oz standard mat. Then a fill coat...and no more glass.

Re: Fiberglass weight

Thanxs guys thats what I was looking for... Also I want to add... the transom is a i/o right now but I will be cutting it down and converting it for o/b. I know to use mat in between the the existing transom and the 3/4 ply I will be adding but what weight of cloth and mat you suggest for the exterior part and how many layers... So you know I have a 17 glasply semi deep v boat that I am converting over to a side console fishing boat. I will be starting it soon and making it a fall/ winter project.

Re: Fiberglass weight

I would make the deck super strong with a layup of cloth/12oz roving/cloth. This will waterproof your deck and make it strong like bull :) !!! Most people use lots of resin and 1.5oz mat.If you decide to use mat , make sure that if you are using epoxy instead polyester resin that your mat is compatible with epoxy resin!!! Most mat will only "break down" in a polyester resin. As for the Transom 6/10oz cloth/24oz roving/6/10 oz cloth with 4-5 layers over plywood should be plenty strong. Just remember that there is nothing wrong with "stronger is better" :D
