I got an idea and want some feed back from those that know.
I am redoing an 85 Bayliner cuddy cab, stringers and deck, could this work?
Coat wood with 700198 Boat yard polyester resin from Infinity Composites.
Grind/sand hull for clean bonding.
Bond strigers to hull with FASCO 110 epoxy and make fillets, use csm to create
a bounding surface on hull using Boat yard resin, wrap 1708 Biaxil from hull
up to stringer top endge on both sides, use CSM to cap stringers. Then use
Polyester Epoxy(edit I ment Polyester resin) with 3:1 medium hardener from Uscomposites to do final layup.

The Boat yard polyester resin stays tacky(according to their website) for next
layer.

Asking for thoughts of this combo due to I have never fiberglassed, and the
boat yard resin is cheaper. From what I have been reading it's not the resin
but the cloth that makes the strength.

Ant one use Infinity Composites Boat Yard Resin?
Any problems using two different resins? Both still polyester just different brands.

Thanks in advance. or just thanks for reading.

Re: Fiberglassing Questions

I just did my stringers yesterday, I like to keep it simple, so what I did..

Glassed stringers with poly resin and 10 oz matting, same type of boatyard unwaxed resin as you have, went back and resined edges and ends of stringers to seal them good. Did all this out of the boat on trash cans, easier this way.

Bedded them to hull with PL construction adhesive, one tube per side.

Going back today to glass hull to stringer joint with more poly resin and glass.

My stringers are 18 inches tall, 8 feet long , 1/2 inch ply and heavy !

Re: Fiberglassing Questions

jonesg: Did you use the PL adhesive to make fillets for the corners?

Any down falls to using the FASCO epoxy to make fillets?

I'm asking do to cost, currently on lay off and want to do a good job, just
can't afford to drop a "boat load" of money.

does the plan sound OK? wanted to top with csm so I can control height of
decking and not be wrapped looking.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Fiberglassing Questions

You might want to do some reading here on stringer replacemnt to get an idea of what trying to achieve. You're using the terms polyester and epoxy as if there the same thing, they're two very different products and you should stick with one or the other. If you're tight on funds go with polyester, it will work fine.

The Epoxy I am refering to "Bond strigers to hull with FASCO 110 epoxy and make fillets" sold by uscomposites comes as a two part putty.
I really don't think they accomplish the same thing(epoxy to bond and resin to
glass with)
Parden me but i have done some reading, did you bother to read my 1st post
asking if this consept will work, ondarvr?
Was going to use boat resin to save cost but use roven 1708 biaxial to
accomplish strength. This is what I want to know. But now that I have done
some grinding, I also want to know if Boat resin or Poliester will bond to the
Tiger hair fiberglass that some po used to repair the boat before I got it.

Any help? Great and thanks.
Is it my form of posting? not like a phone call where I could say "that is not
what i meant"
Sorry if it sounds like I have an attitude but ondarvr you appearently did not
read the entire post.(I do not want anyone to think I have an attitude I
respect every ones opinion and knowledge I am green horn on fiberglass)

Re: Fiberglassing Questions

i called a representative from us composites before i purchased my glass and such. the tech man told me that epoxy will stick to polyester, but not the other way around. so if you put the putty in with epoxy, then lay polyester on top you may not get it to adhere at all. you can make putty with polyester (additive you buy for the resin--- i think it's called cabosil or something) and then lay polyester resin and cloth on top of that. that is the route i plan on going for the same concerns as you, epoxy will cost me a few hundred more $$ and from what i hear polyester will work just fine.

i would talk to a rep and make sure the two different products you use are compatible. epoxy sticks to everything but once you use it you can't use certain things cause they won't stick to it. gelcoat being another product you can't use on top of epoxy. another reason why i stuck to polyester resin and not epoxy.

Re: Fiberglassing Questions

you can also use the poly resin and wood shavings to make putty then set in with the 1708 and waxed resin.

I made a type-O, then edited for correction. Have to slow down some times,

Re: Fiberglassing Questions

i read yoru post bedrest and i think you don't quite understand what i'm saying. that epoxy will work great to hold your stingers in.

the problem is you are now gonna use polyester resin to put on top of that. the polyester resin (i'm pretty sure) will not stick to your new epoxy-- thus making it not the greatest choice. if you were using epoxy to glass your stingers in, you woudl be fine. it's the fact of putting polyester on top of epoxy that i worry about.

Re: Fiberglassing Questions

Thanks Smeag, when I order I'll ask about the putty.
Sounds like best to make the "Peanut butter mixture", was trying to keep it
on the simple side as I am a green horn with fiberglass.
Any thoughts about the method of 1708 from hull to top of stringer both sides
then cap that with CSM to build to correct hiegth? trying to make deck flat
as possible.

Re: Fiberglassing Questions

Not a problem, stuff like that happens to everybody.

What you bed the stringers in isn't that important, you're not actually looking for it to be part of the bonding process, its the laminate that holds everything in place. Bedding the stringers in something just helps to eliminate creating a hard spot where the plywood may come in contact with the hull and not allow it to flex in the same way the surrounding area does and possibly causing some stress cracks.

You can use adhesive, bits of foam, any type of spacer that can be removed, putty, etc. To create a radius mix up some putty and use a bondo spreader cut to shape you need, be carefull not to make a mess.

Re: Fiberglassing Questions

Hey Bedrest2, so your doing a full restoration on your 85 Bayliner Cuddy Cab. I bought a 89 a couple weeks ago and just yesterday ripped out all the carpeting. How bad was your floor? I've never done work on a boat before and I've never worked with fiberglass. I'd like to gut it and do a full restoration, I'm excited...but I would like to know exactly what I'm getting into. I want to keep this boat for a long time and will put in all the hours to restore it. Did you take any pictures? I've been reading and want to be sure before i start cutting the old floor out.
