fibre glass skinned

today i went out to do a few little tasks on the boat and had a good look at the hull and discovered the whole thing is skinned in fibreglass is this a good thing? i didnt expect it to be like this i thought it was just the plywood with some very thick paint

i told you it was, it's a homebuilt plywood boat, that has had a couple of coats of Fiberglass. where the glass is cracked is where the water gets in under the glass and rots the wood. the strength and structure of that boat is the wood, not the fiberglass.

as i said before, the job of restoring that boat would be much easier, if they had just painted it, or varnished it. now you have to deal with the wood and the fiberglass.

you really need to get some wood working, and fiberglassing books an start education yourself. patching wood is one thing, patching fiberglass, and it looking good , is a totally diifferent.

thanks TD i guess it must mostly be ok then the only cracks were in the cab and transom the cab is gone and transom will be doing later on

Read the wooden boat forums postings. There is alot of info about glassing over wooden boats. Apparently it is not a good thing.
