I just got of the phone with my Johnson/Evinrude dealer. He feels that the FICHT system is better than the 4 stroke. Any comments/Recommendations?

- Mike

maillon,

You are going to get a whole lot of opinions on this one.

IMO, the John/Rude 90-115 Ficht engines were much less troublesome than the V-6's. At that, I believe Bombi. has fixed the Ficht.

They offer a good power to weight ratio and the low end torque is awesome.

It's a difficult decision. The 4S 115 would also be a great choice.

I certainly would agree that a DFI (or Ficht) engine is probably lighter than an equal power 4 stroke. Tests have showed some DFI engines with a broader torque band and slightly better gas economy than most 4 strokes.

However: Even DFI 2 strokes use oil and make some smoke. My own experience has been that they are noisier and harder to start and idle for trolling. But those are my priorities. Yours may be different.

Every 4 stroke I have ridden with or used has been smoother and quieter than even the DFI 2 strokes I have used or ridden with.

Most of the first generation 4 strokes are heavier than similar DFI 2 strokes, but there are exceptions among the second generation 4 strokes and more exceptions ready for introduction. Honda is rumored to have a new line of lightweight, EFI 4 strokes ready for Spring, Merc's EFI 4 strokes under 115HP are light. Suzi's DF140 is lighter and less expensive than most 2 strokes, DFI or carbed, in that range.

I suggest that you get demo rides on both, on boats similar to yours. See which has the features and performance that turns you on.

I don't blame the dealer for his comments. He believes in his product and will recommend it.

As for the question about whether DFI 2 stroke is "better" than an EFI 4 stroke? A lot of that is taste, but EFI controlled 4 strokes have been perfected in cars for many years, and DFI in 2 strokes has had a short, not very sparkling history.

Nothing beats actual demonstrations. :)

The difference between 4-strokes and 2-strokes is the valves. Whether a 4-stoke can take running hard without valve clatter will be a test of time. Car engines have transmissions that control the RPM's. Outboards are different. Nevertheless, in mid-ranges and low-hp engines, the 4-strokes are nice. If you want to run fast and hard, 2-strokes are still worth considering.
