happy 4th everyone
i've got an older 2 stroke 115 that takes premixed fuel and was just wondering how everyone else fills the tank.
the boat is new to me so i try to premix in a tank and then add it. would it be a big deal to fill it up at a gas station and then add the oil when i know how much fuel has been added? mine is an 18 gallon tank (not portable).

No problem at all with doing it that way, just make sure you give it time to mix before using it. Driving around a bit does the trick.

That's how I did it in my old 65 Silverline with and inboard tank in the bow. I just had one of those 2 stroke oil/mix measuring cups and dumped in the correct amount after I topped off the boat. Did it that way for years without a problem. ;)

By the time you pull out of the driveway the fuel is mixed so your technique will work just fine.

As someone mentioned in another thread it's hard to add oil after you top off. Add it as you fill: one pint to six gallons. If your tank is bone dry, add the oil first and the gas splashing in will mix it.
Don't sweat the precise ratio; after you refill a tank with some still in it you will end up off.
And don't forget the stabilizer. I don't even have room for it when my in-hull hits the tip top.

To top off the tank I carry a two gallon plastic container in which oil and gas are mixed. Once tank gets almost full, add the oil, etc. then top off with as much of the two gallons as needed. Eliminates worry about filling tank too full and not having room for oil.

Re: fillin' up

If filling up my tank starts to make a noise about a half gallon before it will cut off and squirt out of the overflow. I put the oil in as soon as I hear that and then give it a quick shot of gas to rinse the oil off the filler neck.
