Filling a gauge hole

What is the best way to fill a 4" gauge hole on a center console. The console will be painted after repairs.

Please take my advice for what it's worth being that I am still quite new and in the early stages of my own restoration, but I would venture a guess that the BEST way would be to build it up with fiberglass. For my own project, however, I am planning on filling mine with marine filler/peanut butter, sanding smooth, and painting. Though my holes aren't quite 4" (my largest is maybe 3").

If it's fiberglass, and since it's above the water line you could do what this guy did. Basically make a plug, glass it in and fair and paint. Would be better to use quality glassing materials but... This would work on the cheap.

It's a fiberglass console. I am going to cut out a wooden plug, glass it in on the back, use filler on the front followed by glazing putty.

Put a gauge in it.

Yep...an hour meter, a clock, a beer level gauge (always reads full)...much easier.

Put a large cup holder into the hole to make a cubby to put your sunglasses, cell phone, car keys, or whatever in.
