filling holes in transom, and then making some new ones

I've got a Cobia fiberglass hull boat. It had the remnants of an Evinrude 90 hp motor which I am replacing with a Force 85 hp. Not all of the mounting holes line up, so I will need to drill some new ones and fill the old. What to use to fill the old ones (approx 1/2" diameter)?

5200 sealant? or chop up some matt and mix it with resin and pack?

the original holes were threaded. i could not tell if this was drilled and tapped or drilled to the O.D. of the bolt threads and then some sort of putty applied when the bolts were installed. seems it would add some strength, is this necessary on the new holes I make?

Thanks,
Tom

Wooden dowels (1/2") and some epoxy.

Coat the dowels with epoxy and hammer them in..... cut them so they sit recessed and foll the rest with epoxy too.

The original holes were not tapped but may have "acquired" the threads of the old bolts ;)

Do not use 5200 with fiberglass mat. It is best straight and it stays somewhat pliable forever.

Remains of a 90 evinrude ? what happened. Even the remains are worth money

Ahh, I didn't think of that... makes good sense. Thanks!

I don't know. I was told that the boat had been a project for the local scout troop in Greenwood Lake, NY a few years back, but now the scouts have lost interest and the scoutmaster's wife wanted it out of the yard. There were various bits and parts of an E90TLEND motor on there, but none of the real good parts... the powerhead and gearcase had been removed before I got the boat.

I took off the Evinrude transom mount, center case, steering setup, VRO tank and a few other parts today. I certainly don't need them, so I'll probably get them on CL or eBay in the near future.

Thanks,
Tom
