Filling in Holes in Transom

I know this has been discussed before but................

I am going to be replacing my depthfinder and when I remove the existing transducer I want to fill in the holes properly.

Is MarineTex a good candidate? If not, what does everyone recommend?

Just the screw holes....Marine Tex is fine.

You could use resin thickened with cabosil as well if you have it lying around.


What kind of fishfinder and transducer are you going with?

I am modifying a Garmin 192C with the GSD20 to become a sounder.

Way too runny to fill holes on a vertical surface. It is also hard to mix accurately, in small batches. Some have said to let it set up a bit before you apply it but I tried that once and it was too big a PITA.

One thing I have not tried with MarineTex is to add some cabosil to thicken it up. Don't see why it would not work. Then at least you would have the white color. Mix it thick enough so there is no sag. Press it in with a flat blade then quickly wipe around the holes with a little acetone or lacquer thinner.

Ive used it MANY times for just this... and never had a problem... I find it real easy to work with also... I have also found that it does work if you wait a little bit for it to set if your having dripping problems...

Whats the best way to fill larger holes in transom, such as 1" diameter by 1/2" depth???

I'd use a mixture of resin, milled fibers, and cabosil. That is, use a structural putty to fill the hole.

Plug a larger hole with a dowel (f' glass boats), cut to slightly shorter than the hole depth length. Then apply whatever top coat you want.

Aluminum boats are a bit trickier.

If you're having Sagging Problems with your choosen Fillers,.........

After you strike it off with the Putty Knife,.......
Apply a small piece of Tape,.... Masking tape,.. Duct tape,.... It Don't Matter......
Then after it sets up,... Pull the Tape,+ Sand it......
