filling my cooling system..help!

my merc repair manual says to use soft water w/ an auto cooling sys. rust inhibitor... but i only know one way to fill it. with my hose through the water pickup intake on the lower unit. i must be missing something, again. do i need to use an evacuator/dispensor through my water drain hole??? thx again! you guys know where i'd be without you? fishin' off the dock!!!

The manual is probably referring to those engines with a Fresh Water Cooling system.
What manual do you have, if it's the OEM manual, what page number are you reading it from?

If you do not have a cylindrical shaped object with a radiator cap on it attached to your engine, then this does not apply to you......
If you do, then fill it just like a car.....
If you do not, then you are raw water cooled.....
