filling omc sx outdrive with fluid

I have an omc sx outdrive that i need to put outdrive fluid in. I cannot get the lower plug out at all. I know that I am supposed to fill the lower unit from the bottom until it fills up to the overflow port bu the shifter cable, then fill the upper unit thru the cap on the top of the drive. Here is my question, if I CANNOT get the bottom cap out can I fill the entire unit from the top. I realize I will have to fill it very slowly allowing the fluid to get down thru the drive and fill all air voids. assuming I do that is it possible to fill it entirely from the top ? If this is possible should I run the outdrive slowly for a minute or two after filling and then attempt to "top it off " incase any air voids existed ?

Sorry, I should have been clear I have had the drive off and upper and lower units apart so although I cannot get the bottom plug out, I was able to remove all the old fluid. Thanks

Get an impact screwdriver with a big bit, the plug will come out.

I understand and I tried that but the problem is that the previous owner distroyed the plug trying to get it out. I will have to drill it and use and ez out to remove it. I just cant do that today and I was hoping to get some fluid in it so that i can demo it for a guy who wants to buy the boat. Any way to make the fill from top idea work enuf to keep from damaging the drive ?

Sorry to be a Pain in the A##, but you also helped me with another issue regarding the ignition on this boat. I posted a followup question for you on that thread when you get an opportunity if you could check it out that would be great.. Thanks

I don't know, is it worth the gamble? I wouldn't fill it any other way than what the manuel says.

yes...you need to drill the plug out and use and easy out. You can not fill the drive through the vent hole...it absolutely needs to be filled from the bottom up or you will get air in there....which is no good.

It's worth the little extra time to do this the right way

yes you can fill an SX or a swedish drive through the vent, I do it several times a week and have for 15 years or so.
however, you MUST make sure the unit is drained first.

way quicker,less mess and simply easier.
