A reasoned debate?

Bush was comparing Iraq to Viet Nam just the other day. Reality, in this war, seems to be multiple choice.

One thing I don't understand is why everyone assumes Maliki is somehow incompetent because he isn't making more diplomatic progress?

I think he is making exactly all the progress he wants to make. He was just back from meeting with Iran, fer gawds sake. He thinks the Shiites are winning! He was elected by Shiites. This is what he wants!

That his goals are incompatible with US goals seems to be an inconvenent reality.

As soon as we figure out a way to balance strength in the region (thru diplomacy), and balance strength between the Sunni and the Shiites, we have a chance to achieve some sort of reasonable outcome. As long as we raly on Maliki and our military, we will have the outcome we have now.
