Finally, after changing water pump, checking engine covers, blowing air e.t.c. I finally found the problem with my 1985 25hp Merc. When I saw that the impeller had pieces broken off, I removed them before putting on the new impeller. But since it didn't correct the problem, I took off the lower unit again to check the water tube seal (afer I wasted my time on the other corrective measures). After removing the seal, I saw a piece of impeller lodged inside the pump cover. I would never have seen it if I didn't remove this seal / water tube. Anyway, I saw how many other people had the same problem as me and thought I'd pass this simple cure along.

Thanks everyone for responding to my problem and now we / you can add another overlooked cure for the next person that may have the problem of extremely hot water and low psi coming out the tell-tale.

Appreciate your consideration for your fellow boater.

What we need to do, when we find what you found, is reassemble the pieces to see if we can totally resurrect the critter. If not, pieces are lodged in the engine (as you discovered) or blew on out. Only way you know is do as you did and back track.

Glad you found it.

A real bummer to have a job finished, you think, just to find out you have to go back in. Nice thing is that it's easier to go back than to make the initial journey. Just the mental obstacle you have to get through. With boats, cars, trucks, and farm equipment, have made the journey numerous times.

LOL--yep, Mark, been there done that and--oops, did it again, did it again--after the third or forth disassembly/reassembly you get pretty good at it. I think I could do my lawnmower in my sleep!

Just had to piece an impeller back together on my 1975 Merc 850 to be sure I had all of it. About 30 pieces, large and small, worked with little pieces of tape to reconstruct it. Tedious, kind of like a jigsaw puzzle or an episode of CSI, but the peace of mind--priceless!

Hear you Motor Boater. When I attack a problem, I want a conviction; critter hanging from the gallows; otherwise it is an exercise in futility....what keeps you awake at night; surmising where is the unknown piece that will rain on your parade.
