A friend of mine got me a set of steel wheels for my wifes Explorer. The others got to the point of leaking due to cracks and rust around the valve stem.

These new to me wheels are from a 97 model. They were rusty a bit and I put them in my blasting cabinet. I got all the paint and rust off them using aluminum oxide to blast them with.

Now I need to know what primer and paint I should use on them. I really don't want to use any two part paint systems in my new HVLP guns. Rustoleum makes a marine primer and paint. The trim on the Explorer is gray, so that is probably the color I'll stay with.

Any suggestions? I want something that is going to be durable to stand up to the salty roads during the winter season. Thanks.........SS

Thanks Bondo, I have used the marine primer and paint on some stainless back shields for some ice bins. IT gets plenty of pounding constantly of ice hitting it. Its been on there for 2 years now. No chips or peeling. It is a bit more expensive, but I think it will be worth the extra pennies. Thanks as it is always nice to hear a second opinion before one screws up by not thinking ahead :D.........SS

Well........ a good sealer / primer not the rattle can junk will give you great results. The key on the wheels is really the adhesion of a good primer sealer.

If you want it to last forever, Ive had very good luck with kbs. coatings. I cleaned and sealed a gas tank for my motorcycle this summer using their products. I`ll swear by them.
