Ok we fixed the floor in my 240 Four Winns Horizon. It has a 7.4l GL with the Cone King. I'm a complete newbie, was a master helms man in the Navy, but this ain't no Frigate.

Everything i'v read says my engine is supposed to hit max revs at 4800 rpm, mine revved and pulled all the way to 6k! It has a 15" X 17 water sports prop. The speedo was broken, but this thing flat booked!!! The engine cams hard. Would the 6k rpm show a engine thats been worked?

The trim indicator isn't working... What is a good practice for trimming the unit? I trimmed down all the way Then came up a little but couldn't really see the angle. Should i time the drive out of the water from down to a certain trim up?

Can anyone post pics of a good trim for after you plane???

Lake Conroe was supper smooth in this rig too!

About the cone, my buddy was at full throttle and backed off to 1/4 throttle, and it seemed to decluch then imediatly grabbed back in gear? Is this normal? Forward and reverse seem to operate flawlesly.

I was really happy that the first time out the boat handled perfecly, i unloaded, docked and loaded the boat pretty darn good!

i'm going to finish fixing some interior pieces now and get on the water before i go to cape town this weekend..

thanks y'all!

Re: FINALLY got my boat out after 1.5 yrs!!! Got some questions...

i am also a newbie to the i/o world but have been a GM tech for 20+ years and i will give you my 2 cents worth until someone with more experience chimes in. I personally would NEVER bring a big block to 6k unless it was designed for it;IE racing engine, sounds like the prop is too small a pitch but i could be wrong. If you are SURE the tach is accurate, i wouldnt bring it past the 4800 max recommended. As for the trimming, i just trim my boat down on "take off" to keep the bow down then trim it till it porpioses :sp: a bit then back off. I rarely use the trim gauge. Just kind of go by feel and sound, you can tell when you are plowing. Not sure about the "de-clutching" but doesnt sound right to me. Im sure someone with a bit more boating experience will chime in soon also.

Howdy,

It's unlikely you are actually turning 6000 RPM.

You might also indicate your year model. 7.4GL Sounds like Volvo Penta.

There's a couple of things that could be happening.

You may have a shift cable problem that is actually pulling it out of gear. If it is really doing that, it will destroy the cone clutch VERY FAST (and may have already damaged it) YOU NEED TO FIX THAT IMMEDIATELY(!)

OTOH, you may have a coupler or prop hub slipping. If it's a coupler, it might do it a couple more times before it completely fails.

If it's a prop hub, same thing except it might go a little longer than a couple of times......

If your tach shows 6000 RPM it's probably set wrong or it's defective.

I wouldn't go anywhere in that boat unless I had a SEATOW account and a VHF radio or good cell phone coverage!

Just kind of go by feel and sound, you can tell when you are plowing.
Absolutely the way to do it!!!

The gage only good for knowing when the drive is all the way UP.

Re: FINALLY got my boat out after 1.5 yrs!!! Got some questions...

It's a Volvo engine, the 7.4 gl with a volvo syle/inspired OMC King Cobra outdrive. 330 hp

I'll put a small tach on the coil or find the signal wire off the control module. I was holding it at 4.8k and my buddy slammed the throttle WOT and i saw it hit 6k. I was worried, but she stayed cool, the engine was sound, and the oil pressure stayed good at around 80psi, that is a tad high, but i have no clue as to what pump is in this thing, but to stay that high, it's a big'un.

So i'll just have to go by feel on the trim... That will take a while but i'm willing to give it a try! What a blast! I have to go to Cape Town this Saturday for a survey but i can't wait to get back and in the water.

With the de-clutching, my buddy was at WOT and yanked back on the throttle and thought it came out of gear, he got back on it and it jumped back and was running like a bat outta heck :) I'm going to look at the service manual and how the cones work, i'm thinking like the bevel gears in a transmission, when you are on it with a load you can't pull it out of gear, but if you back off then you can... He might have gone all the way to neutral.

Any one with the Cone King, this weekend run her at WOT and yank it back to 1/2 or 1/4 throttle and see if it feels funny... A Volvo SX or DP would feel the same as the Cone King is just a bigger version.

I can't remember being in a BBC that wound up to 6k like this thing... But again, she cams hard..

I'll get it to a shop and see what they think, or look at the manual and see if i can just check it without adjusting anything... If anything needs to be adjusted then to the shop she goes... Fixing some interior right now, can't wait to take the family out!

Thanks yall!

I think i'll buy a cheap WT and OP gauge too and mount them in the engine compartment... Looks like i might have some bad gauges.... A 6k BBC is a 700hp monster... This one ain't :)

Re: FINALLY got my boat out after 1.5 yrs!!! Got some questions...

What is the year and model number?

OMC did the 7.4L engine from 1990 to 1998. It was a cone clutch drive in all cases but NOT an SX until around 95 or so (and later)

If you have the early one, be very careful with it. Hard parts are getting scarce to non-existent for them.

While its not an SX, it shares many parts and the complete design concept... The engine is almost entirely GL volvo, hence the 7.4l GL name. The risers and many other parts are the same... Drop the Cone king, bolt on a DP and the volvo engine driven pump and its a volvo ;) I do think it has spit fire ignition, but i'm not sure as volvo doesn't post part numbers online like the other companies.

Nope, i was told i had a OMC voodoo spitfire ignition.... wrong, unless the volvo penta ignition is the same as the OMC spitfire.... It's a Volvo engine.

7.4GLPHUS is your engine model number? year model?

If it's truly an OMC 7.4L engine you can find the model number at http://epc.brp.com just click "View Parts Catalogs" You don't have to put in an email address.

click the drop down menu and "Stern Drive" and you can find your year and model.

That number above is a Volvo number I think. The closest OMC number is 744DPHUB.

If you do have an OMC engine and it does have the Spitfire ignition, don't plan on fixing it if something breaks .....like the module. They're not available from anywhere unless you find one collecting dust on some dealers shelf. (and if they have one expect to pay a fortune for it)

If it's a Volvo take a deep breath and pat yourself on the back! ...One more dodged bullet!!

I am so glad I pulled all my King Cobra stuff!!

Good luck,

Rick

Re: FINALLY got my boat out after 1.5 yrs!!! Got some questions...

It is a OMC package, but this is during the Volvo years, the engine is a volvo... But the module isn't available from them either it seems, if there is an issue with the ignition system we'll be swapping out to a marine msd, or something similar.

Mines a 744DPHUB if memory serves correct.

Did you have the Cone king or the Dog?

There is a poster on here that simply swapped out the Cone king with a DP volvo, said his only issue was making a clip for the shifter linkage... I reakon a SX would be just as easy to swap.

Mine was a DOG. (1987)

We had this conversation last year. You have the "interim" OMC Cone clutch drive. Not an SX.

Like I said before, If it runs well, take good care of it and have a great time! When it blows, pull it all out and replace it with something else (Merc/Volvo)

One additional thing......I remembered someone else having problems finding a raw water pump impeller for that drive mounted pump.

It appears that it's no longer available, which means that no one is making them anymore. I looked at 3 different OMC parts suppliers and they all said "NLA or "Out of Stock".

If you plan to run that drive, you NEED to find someone with some raw water pumps so you have spares. If you do find them, buy as many as they have .......

Just saying.....

Good luck....

Don't get me wrong i know its not a SX... But it shares all the technology with the SX... I consider this the SX's big brother. If anything bad happens i'll do what FRC did and just slap a SX/Dp on the back and let her eat... Or burn it! :)

See my edit above about the raw water impellers.....

Don't buy an SX before you KNOW for sure it will "slap-on" The interim OMC Cone is not exactly the same.

Good luck! If you go out in the ocean......go with a cell phone or VHF radio!!

Re: FINALLY got my boat out after 1.5 yrs!!! Got some questions...

The Volvo engine driven water pump bolts to the Volvo derived 7.4 GL. That is what this other cat did on here. But thats not a worry at the moment. People always ask me how long a part, mostly on oil rigs from the drilling equipment to the BOP will last. I tell them right up until it fails. On other websites folks like the brute strength of the Cone King.

It's not a issue until something breaks, and in that case right at that moment it doesn't matter about the parts availability... you will need a radio too ;-)

I understand the differences between the King and SX... But i'm also able to see the similarities which are numerous.

And i buy every water pump kit i come across ~!!!!! :-D I have 3 spares so far, they range from 60$ to 130$ And now that i understand how to run a outdrive on the ears, i shall not be pre-maturely messing them up anymore....

She will be in Lake Conroe, Lake Livingston and Lake Summerville, no need to go offshore, i do that enough at work. The last rig i was on was being circled by some of the nicest biggest little yachts i've ever seen.... There was a lot of money floating that weekend...

Here is the post about the DP

attachment.php

Re: NEED HELP 1994 OMC 7.4 King Cobra
92 Chris Craft 268 Concept drive pic

The drive is a 1.68 ratio DP-S with F5 props came from a bigblock powered Baja

you need the drive and the pivot housing (picture is painted black) everything else is KC I used a Bellows kit from an SX along with the bearing

You have to replace the shift cable (well I did anyway) I removed the shift interrupt from the OMC and used a Morse cable from the drive to the shifter
(which I replaced with a Livorsi unit found on eBay)

Water pump (new on eBay $168.00 with bracket) is a Volvo type crank mounted wayyy easier than the belt type pumps on OMC

I used the KC rams even though I have some SX rams they do not go too low
I don't know if I have different KC rams or what?? but I'll wait till winter to change hoses and rams

I was worried about the raw water hose @ the Gimble and the shift cable since the SX swaps sides but since I do not have exhaust bellows the hose and cable route under the gimble bellows OK

I think it took longer to make a $1.35 shift cable clip (not in stock anywhere near me) than it did to get the drive setup

I had roughly $3000 in parts including the drive minus $520. sold KC on eBay
Gained 10MPH (with lots more potential) and super holeshots

So the drive DOES have a raw water pump on it and the PO installed an engine driven pump? That would solve that problem!

I know a LOT of people thought I could bolt a Volvo on my previously installed (dog-clutch) King Cobra but there's other "stuff" you must do with the transom mount to do it. (DonS has done a couple of those I think and still has a list of parts needed)

I am not sure you can bolt an SX on that gimbal. It may fit.

But you can definitely buy a Volvo SX transom mount, flywheel housing and inner transom plate etc and make that work with a 454. It'll be a lot of money.....but boats are never cheep are they???:p

Believe me, you put a Duoprop drive on that boat and you'll LOVE IT!

My 21ft Four Winns Liberator with the 460 King Cobra was a real DOG out of the hole and now just ROCKETS out of the hole with the 454/Bravo III (which is supposedly 10hp less) It is about 3 mph less at a lower RPM...... (60mph@5000 RPM 460 Cobra, 57@MPH 4600 RPM 454 Bravo III).......It would be faster if I wasn't rev limited now:rolleyes: Oh well!

Re: FINALLY got my boat out after 1.5 yrs!!! Got some questions...

You really can't lump the 460 and 454 cone in the same sentence... The Drive shaft on the cone and SX are the same... I would use my transome mount and the SX pivot housing... Remember that the dog and cone are similar in name and apperance only... This guy is sitting behind a volve ;-)

But we are talking like this thing is going to drop off the boat tomorrow, odds are it won't and when/if it breaks then it'll just be fixed... The 6,000 bucks was already spent on the boat, so drive her tell she lets go :)

Nah.....

If there's nothing wrong with it, it'll probably run a good long time!

Just make sure that you pull it and check the u-joints and alignment. (that's a yearly service usually)

Ensure that it's filled properly with a synthetic drive oil (Merc or Volvo etc) and if you live where it freezes, make sure you drain the block etc.....those are usually the "big things" that'll kill any boat!
