SO I got my new project, a 2180 trophy with a 2004 bravo set up bravo 1 drive and mercruiser 250hp engine, 2 bbl carbed,

It is stuck from sitting for 4 years, So I pulled the drive to make sure it is isnt stuck. It was a bear to get off took a bunch of prying and jimmying to get off. After about an hour it was off, the u joints look great the bellows and gimbal bearing are dry and tight. And it spins free.

Looks more and more like a long block is in my future, the engine looks clean and was FWC with only 137 hours put on the engine and OD before it was layed up in 06

Either way I am pulling it next weekend.

I am guessing the engine is stuck from sitting, even if i free it it would probably require at best new rings right ?

Well,

You won't know until you get the heads off...

Hard to say. You'll probably want to look at a few of the bearings too.

I'd pull all the plugs and spray some pentrating lube in each cylinder. Let it set for a day or two. Spray again, and try to turn it over by hand. If there wasn't any water in the cylinders, you might be talking only stuck rings or very light rust that would clean up the first time you start it. After running it, do a compression and leak-down test, to determine if it needs rebuilding or not.

I agree with imported john, i have seen on many occasions where and engine was seized due to sitting and after breaking free would run and run well for years. why spend money you may not have to.

Worst case if its badly rusted it would need to be honed or re-bored and new rings installed. No need for a long block unless yoiu have had major water damage

Most Trophys I see are "stuck" due to water intrusion from the exhaust system as the engine sits low and due to their crappy design there is no room for riser extensions...

no water injestion here, so I will get a pry bar and give it a go, I think it is just stuck from sitting for 4-5 years, If I break it loose, I will go with a compression and leak down test.

I am making a fitting for one of my compression testers to push air into the cylinders that I read about in a post here, we will see how it works.

Before you try to turn it with a breaker bar, spray some penetrating oil into the cylinders and let it sit. Rushing things may break a ring or two. To take compression readings, you should use the screw-in fitting compression guage. The push-in rubber fitting can give incorrect readings, especially since it's often difficult to keep it held in place because of the manifolds being in the way. Remember to do the test with a fully-charged battery, the throttle wide open and all the plugs out of the engine, Check your bellows and gimbal bearing as well. Good luck. Hy
