Well today I finally got wheat harvest officially started here on the Guy Ranch. Been cutting samples waiting for it to dry down for the last 2 weeks. The sample my dad cut at 5 pm was finally dry enough. So when I got done working ground at 6:30, I got one of the semis and headed up to the patch of wheat where the combine was. I got started cutting at about 7pm, finished filling the semi at just before 9, not too bad :). I hope it goes as well tomorrow. Should take around 10 days to finish up cutting wheat, if I get to cut for 6 hours a day. If the weather holds, I'll be MIA around here for a while, Working ground from sunup til 2 or 3 pm then cutting wheat til dark, or later if the dew holds off. So hold down the fort, fellows. :D

Update: I just got in at 10:30 this eve. Since Sunday, we've gotten 200acres of wheat cut, 240 acres of beans planted. Not bad for a 2 man crew, man we're burning the diesel, almost 250 gallons a day @ $4.10. Looks like you guys are holding it down just fine, I better get to bed.

sounds like you need to plant some corn, to afford keeping the equipment running.

Update: I've been able to put in pretty long days on the wheat cutting, I finished up this evening. :D Now just got to get the last 200 acres of soybeans in. BTW, TD, the diesel we're burning is B20 (20% soy-diesel), and we have 400 acres of corn in the ground ( it's about 5ft high)

We use to do about of 1000 acres of hay. Its a lot of work. Boy i can tell you i don't miss doing it at all. Hope the rain holds off for you. One year we got the hay down and then it started to rain. It all went into silage.

God bless you, so much for your holiday weekend. :(. It is the midwest farmer who not only feeds us but the world as well. And to whom so little credit is given. My hat's off to you and I am amazed at your progress. Thanks for the updates and please accept my "well done".

Re: Finally got wheat harvest started

Update: It rained last night. We had gotten all of the ground with enough mosture planted yesterday morning. As soon as it dries up, we'll finish up the last of the first crop soybeans, then if it plants ok we'll plant another 150 acres of after wheat soybeans. At least I had time to work on equipment yesterday, on top of the normal maintenance, I had to put new fan belts on the backhoe (doesn't sound like a big job, but on this machine you have to remove the front mounted hydraulic pump in order to replace the fan belts). It broke the fan belts Saturday while I was repairing some terraces with it. So it sat in the feild till this morning, when I moved it to the next place I need to use it, hopefully it will be dry enough tomorrow to work there.

Re: Finally got wheat harvest started

Hope you can get some $$$ for your wheat. Everybody finished down here a few weeks ago. There was a lot of excitement because we had a bumper crop (over 100 bu in places) and good prices at CBOT. However, the prices down here were 3.50 off Chicago. Transportation was partly to blame, the rest was speculators driving prices up in the futures market. Turns out the market wasnt what a lot of grain buyers thought it was. These are the same speculators that are driving up crude... maybe that bubble will bust one day too.... I hope its a bubble....

Anyways, good luck with your crops. And next time you come to Georgia, bring us some topsoil... it would go nicely with our sand and clay... and im sure the crops would love it!:)

Thanks Don, I've seen those before, I always wondered if they worked well. Guess they would've worked till I could put on the regular belts. The offending belts run the fan and the air compressor off the crankshaft, a pretty big load.

They would get ya to the barn where your tools and a dry area can be found to fix it properly.
PS: Cable tie an extra "Real" belt inplace when you do change it. Like the 3.0L IO guys do.

Update: The last acres of our soybeans are being planted as I type. Guess I can get equipment ready for haying season, it seems to never end. I'm gonna get to the lake sometime soon. :D
