Finally have the stones to night fish. Santa Rosa Sound at sunset BEAUTIFUL (video)

Thanks to my efforts and this forum's contributions, I now have enough faith in my motor to do some night fishing in Santa Rosa Sound (in NW Florida). The sunsets are beautiful. Temperatures are perfect right now. My wife caught her first redfish, but it was one inch below the limit. My son caught his first redfish, too, but it was too small. I caught two speckled trout, but those were also just one inch below the limit. I got a big, splashy hit by what I thought was a Spanish Mackerel, but it also could have been a speck. It hit my live shrimp the second it hit the water, took off running, making my reel scream and doubling over my rod. It even jumped in the air once. What a bummer it was when it bit through the 25 lb leader and my line went slack. Regardless....I've got the bug now!

Awesome Nate. I'm jealous. My family and I LOVE that part of the Sunshine State. We haven't been in several years and I'm jonesin' pretty hard. Might have to sneak down there this summer. I usually do a little surf fishing in front of the house just for giggles and always end up catching a few Ladyfish.

Shame on me. I've lived here since 1992 and have just now gotten around to taking advantage of the fishing here. :facepalm: Helps to have a boat, which took me two years to completely rebuild and work all the bugs out.

My bro-in-law says that you can always catch whiting inside the first sand bar using live sand fleas that you supposedly can just scoop up by the dozen. We're camping at Ft. Pickens in late November, so we'll do some surf fishing and also fish the pier at the pass. This past April were camping there and my daughter says, "Daddy, let's go surf fishing!" I drag the gear down to the beach, find out to my chagrin that you have to wade out to the first sand bar and cast from there (because the water is still like ice), then wade back to the beach. I'm now a soprano, and my daughter and her friend decide to go back to camp when I get this hit. Nice size pompano that she insists was rightfully hers to reel in because going fishing was her idea. We did a 50/50 on the reeling. Cooked it on the grill that evening.

Does Fort Pickens still have the fishing pier that is across the bay from NAS Pensacola? I lived for several years just north of Milton in Allentown. Did many nights fishing at Fort Pickens. Many memories and lots of fish. We had a small Coleman stove and would cook up our catch right on the pier. Shared lots of it with tourists that would come down there. I did the mechanic work for the Sanborn brothers that owned Adventures Unlimited. Trying to get my wife to agree to move there for our retirement. One the best places I have ever lived.

Great to hear your taking advantage of the fishing there. Once I came back to Ohio, I didn't fish for 10 years as I couldn't see what fun it was to catch what we called bait fish in Florida

Yes, Ft. Pickens has a pier. Last time I fished there, I caught nothing but puffer fish?!? Interesting looking fish.

Born and raised there, but moved to Atlanta 25 years ago. Just moved back this March and bought a boat. We use it to go to the beach at the Sound. No fishing yet, wife is to impatient and I am almost as bad. We just beat all the traffic when something is going on at the beach, like 4th of July or the Blues flying. We head out of Bayou Texar and head around Gulf Breeze to the Sound laughing all the way at the traffic stuck on 3 mile and Bob Sikes bridge and anchor at the Shell. I also want to go crabbing at the point at Fort Pickens when they Jubilee next. Heard they just did that. I'll get back into fishing and skiing next summer when it is warmer. I do like that we can at least boat almost all year round.
