being relatively new here , and reading problems way more then positive events , I will share with you a good one !
first a resume:
I have a 1985 Doal 164 with a 3.0L/alpha one combo,
bought the boat with a cracked block ...around 4 years storage ...
the engine was already out when i bought it.... the wiring harness was in a box unidentifed ,
but the man had already bought the spare engine to drop in ....
let me say first ,a great thanks to all of you who helped me out in this project , your help was so needed ,because for a car mechanic by trade this was a different territory .....
after dissambly/asssembly/fix : the starter , the alternator, the trim pump the fuel gauge etc.... I finally started it two weeks ago on muffs .
timing carb adjutsment, trim pump check etc.... i was ready for the big move
last thursday , great sunny day , went to a quiet ramp on a small river in my area , I was nervous but the fact that the river was small with little current ,I knew that if something hapenned could row back to shore .....
back up the trailer ,just enough to start the engine with the outdrive in the water .....it ran ok but seemed rich a tad .....ater 5 minutes of stable idle , i let the boat afloat near the wharf ......
the idle was too rich : the water backpressure causes this ,so i closed the idle mixture screws a bit .....
after 15 minutes of veriying everything ,I finally let go ......
put it in forward gear , engaged smooth , the boat moved , nervous i was , after all these hours of work , it seems to be cool !
I gave it some more gas , it planed in a very short distance ( surprised i was )
it went great , it felt very light , drove easy , ......went like this varyng the amount of trim, speed turned left right ....and finally drove 5 miles stright and back to wharf .......
the engine+outdrive goes great , temp around 155 , oil pressure 45 ,20 at idle ...... runs really smooth .
shut the engine , looked at my 4 spark plugs : just a nice light tan color, mixture ok ......compression : 150,135, 125,150 ......ill lift the head this fall to reface the valve seats......
so , it his a great success to me , being new to the inboard boats to have acheive this .....
again I coulndt have done it without you members here, with your sound advices , reference to some sites ( wiring harness , engine manual)
and the how to align your engine in lollllllllll
Thanks ,
Dan ( a french frog ,lolll)
