I am building a Stitch and Glue canoe. I have finally made it to the point where it is in the shape of a hull. My dad and I spent about two hours tonight stitching it together and he was amazed that and the end of the night we had the makings of a hull. He didn't think we could do this with flat plywood panels.

Its just a beginning but check out my pics..

http://forums.bateau2.com/gallery/index.php?cat=12442

Great rogerwa, bet you can't wait to get that out on one of those MN lake so you can get eaten alive by mosquitos? :D

Seriously, looks like a lot of fun building. It would give me a great sense of satisfaction. I'm sure it does you as well.

I'm proud of ya for taking on such a project and having it come out so well.

That's a great project that should outlast you.

I've found that there's something special about when a person asks ya, "Where did you get that boat"?

And you can say, "I built it myself". Or better yet, "My Dad and I made it".

It may be different where you live, but here-- there's darn few people that can say that.

///////

If you want to see something funny:

Tell your Dad that since this one came out so good, the next canoe the two of you build will be made from strips of Birch bark sewed together on a frame made from young sapplings like the Indians built them 500 years ago.

I agree, I've been asked so many times now "How long did it take you to restore it?", and I string them along a little by saying "It's not restored" and they say "What? You mean that's all original?"
"Yes"
"How old is it then?"
"About a month"
"Huh?"
And then I put them out of their misery by telling them that it's a brand new boat that I just finished building from scratch, but it's built to 50 year old plans.
Then I usually get hit with a flood of questions about what it's made from, where they can find plans, where did the old motor come from etc...

Re: Finally Making progress on Canoe

Boomyal, I am building this for our place on the river up north. The skeeters are incredible up there in the early summer. I have found the nuetralizer in 3M's Ultrathon. Incredible bug spray.

Petrolhead, the design is the Chenoa from Bateau. I think I am one of the first to build it as they don't have any pics on the site of a finished one..
http://www.boatplans-online.com/proddetail.php?prod=Chenoa

Winger, the one my dad always dreamt of building was a cedar strip canoe. He never got around to it. When I asked if he wanted to help me he was very exited and he still is. After this one is done, I think I am going to help my boys build a small rowboat that they can fish out of. They love to fish and I think this would be a cool dad/sons project.
