Just installed a new Chamberlain Whisper Quiet belt-drive garage door opener. It was on sale this week at the local home store.

Wow, what a nice improvement. We have a tuckunder garage, so noise from our previous opener would resonate throughout the bedrooms above.

Another neat feature is Homelink. My newer 4Runner has Homelink programmable buttons, but until now I couldn't use them. The bulky old remote control is now history, at least for my vehicle. Wife's minivan doesn't have that feature, but at least the new remote is only 2/3 the size of the old one, and much lighter (no 9-volt battery).

Anyway, after 34 years and two other openers it's nice to finally have some peace and quiet in the garage.:) -Ken

Geez now I'm going to wish mine would die :). My garage is also under a bedroom.

I put a lot of similar ones in. I think some of them resonate the ceiling a bit and could use some sort of isolator like a muffler hanger. Often times, they are pretty quite compared to a noisy old door.

Marlboro, yes, we had those installed with our new garage door back in '05. Yours is a good tip for others who might be considering this project.

Another thing I tried with this opener was using rubber toilet washers at the point where the angle bracket connects to the ceiling, a washer on each side of the bracket with the lag bolts going through them. Wow, what a difference. We used to not only hear the pronounced hum of the motor, but also feel a slight vibration underfoot in the bedrooms above the garage. No longer.

Also lubricated hinges, wheel assemblies and bearings with silicon spray, a once-a-year maintenance item. -Ken

I love power garage doors. I am surprised the Genie screw is still operating the crooked and out of square heavy wood door on my slanty shanty.
